I would have to say that my favorite poet is Edgar Allen Poe. I have a limited knowledge of poetry and didn’t arrive at this conclusion until recently. The reason I like Edgar Allen Poe’s poems is because his poems are a lot like small stories written in poem form. My favorite Poe poem is “Eldorado”. This poem is about a knight searching all his life for the land of Eldorado. The poem ends with him simply continuing his search even though he is an old man. A poem like this can really spark my imagination because of its inconclusive ending. The other thing I like about Edgar Allen Poe’s poems is the tone. His poems have melancholy and dark feelings to them. “The Haunted Palace” is a poem about an old castle that is haunted by past events even though it is just an empty building now. “The Happiest Day, The Happiest Hour” tells about a man reminiscing about his youth and reflecting on the fact that he has none of the positive qualities he used to have. This is a constant them in Poe’s writing.
