In the begining of Umbertina I again picked up on the importance of being at one with nature. When Helen Barolini describes the character Umbertina, we see her alone in the fields with her flock. She is at peace and one with herself in the fields. When she moves to the United States with her husband, she is unable to perform jobs such as sewing because she was not used to working in the house.
