Biographical Information:

Ms. Nobulumko Bongco was Tiffany Mane‘s host-aunt. During apartheid, Ms. Bongco served as an activist for the African National Congress (ANC) and as an active member of Umkhonto we Sizwe (“the Spear of the Nation”), the armed wing of the ANC. The second interview with Ms. Bongco took place at a braai held at the Jooste family residence. During the braai, host families and friends of the research team gathered, and sang many of the old liberation songs from the struggle.

Ms. Bongco discusses her family, and her experiences growing up under the Apartheid regime. She alludes to her activities as an activist in Umkhonto we Sizwe.

Bongco speaks in great detail about the meaning, function, and performance of liberation songs during the anti-apartheid movement. The interview also includes a performance of one of the songs that would have been used to commemorate the people who lost their lives at the Sharpeville Massacre or at the Soweto Uprising.
