What Are the Barriers to Child Immunization?

Child getting immunized

In fall 2011, students in Prof. John Henson‘s Health Studies Senior Seminar collaborated with the Sadler Health Center to identify factors that make it difficult for clients to keep their children’s vaccinations up to date. After reviewing the extensive literature in medicine and public health on pediatric immunization compliance, the team devised and administered a brief survey to 84 Sadler clients (20 in-person, and the remainder by phone).  Parents most frequently identified the clinic’s hours of operation and the difficulty of arranging for child care as the main reasons for their children not being up to date for vaccinations. The class made a number of recommendations based on the survey and parents’ comments and passed these along to Sadler staff.
