My comic response focuses on Ben from Shortcomings and the shame he sometimes feels from being Japanese, along with his hatred for the stereotypes of Japanese culture.  He has wanted to be white many times; mainly because he desires white women but I also believe he generally envies Caucasians and wishes to lead the “ultimate white lifestyle” which I’ve portrayed with a picture of Tom Brady.

I decided to expand on the idea of Craig’s having a problem with deciding which gender he was.  I showed the scene of where his babysitter sexually assaulted him to show his loss of power that can be caused by such a traumatic event.  I then showed how Thompson exaggerated the masculinity in the other male characters to really show that the main character may be unsure which gender he really was.

In his graphic novel Blankets, Craig Thompson shows his protagonist destroyed by religion and saved by secularism. This is a rather uncommon examination of a popular theme which gives weight to the novel at the same time as it credits human action. The character Craig chooses to live his life in the moment, rather than spending all of his time questioning his methods in an attempt to get to heaven or waiting for God to save him, to make his decisions for him.
