TIME Awards Will Eisner’s “A Contract With God” Title of First Graphic Novel

Though “A Contract with God” was awarded the title of the first graphic novel in 2003, it’s interesting that despite the fact it was not the first actual book-length graphic novel to be published, it is still recognized as the first.

I don’t think that the terminology should determine “the first graphic novel”. Scott McCloud referred to ancient cave drawings and Mayan epics as being comics, even though the term hadn’t been invented yet. I think the same should go for this, except that it would probably make finding the real first graphic novel very complicated.
