Latin Club will return on Monday October 29. Sessions are from 4:30-5:30 PM in Bosler Hall. Please note the building change for this academic year.

For the Fall semester, we will meet on the following dates:  10/29, 11/5, 11/12, 11/19, 11/26, 12/3. Stay tuned for our Spring semester dates.

While Chris Francese is on Sabbatical, Laura Takakjy (Visiting Assistant Professor in Classical Studies) will be in charge. Ann Heermans-Booth (Adjunct Faculty in Classical Studies) and Laura Takakjy will supervise each session of Latin Club. Two Dickinson Latin students will lead each section of children, who will be divided based on grade-level on the first day.

This year we will meet in Bosler Hall on Dickinson College’s Campus on the third floor. Bosler Hall is at the corner of High Street and N. College Street. There is plenty of parking available at that time on High Street, N. College Street, and West Louther Street.

The club is free, and is supported by the Dickinson Classics department, through the Roberts Fund for Classical Studies. This fund will be used to purchase materials for crafts and so forth.

Salvete omnes! (Hello everybody!)

Latin Club will be returning on Monday, October 23, 2017. We will be meeting every Monday while Dickinson is in session, from 4:30-5:30 in the East College Building. (October 23, October 30, November 6, 13, 20, 27, December 4, January 22, 29.  February 5, 12, 19, 26, March 5, 19, 26, April 2, 9, 16, 23.) See calendar.

If you are interested in registering your child for Latin Club, please e-mail the child’s name, a contact e-mail address, and the child’s grade to Terri Blumenthal at blumentt@dickinson.edu She is the Academic Department Coordinator of the Classical Studies Department. You can also email me with questions at francese@dickinson.edu. Registrations are due by Monday, October 16.

There will be four concurrent sessions:

  • Kindergarten-1st grade
  • 2nd -3rd grade
  • 4th-5th grade
  • 6th-8th grade

All sessions will meet in the Department of Classical Studies, in the East College building at Dickinson College. East College is on N. West St. between High and Louther Streets. There is free parking on High St., Louther St., and College St. in the vicinity of East College. The classics department in on the first floor, and all five sessions will meet in the lobby on the first day. We will divide the students up into their appropriate sessions from there.

Each session will have at least two instructors. These instructors, or magistri, are students at Dickinson, Camp Hill High School, and Trinity High School. Ashley Roman Francese and I will be supervising the instructors throughout the year, and I will teach the 6th-8th grade group. Please stay and meet the magistri if you can on the first day. Parents are more than welcome to participate in all Latin Club activities, but need not stay. There will also be a special Parents’ Day on April 23rd, when the Latin Club students will be planning activities for their parents to participate in and observe.

The Middle School session will be using a textbook called the Cambridge Latin Course (Unit 1). We will provide the book. In addition to that there will be various other crafts and activities throughout the year, a planetarium show, a lecture on Hercules, etc…

Latin Club will meet every Monday when Dickinson classes are in session. Note that this does not always correspond to the school district schedule. We will endeavor to send out reminders around holiday time to keep you up to speed.

Latin Club is a fun way for younger students to encounter Latin and ancient Roman culture, to learn some mythology and classical culture, and English vocabulary and grammar as well. There will be games, songs, crafts, and various projects.

The Latin Club will meet on Mondays, starting November 10th, 2014, and continuing through late April 27, 2015, from 4:30 to 5:30 PM in the East College building at Dickinson College. East College in on N. West St. between High and Louther Streets. Here is a link to Google Maps that shows the area and parking. There is free parking on High St., Louther St., and West St. in the vicinity of East College. The classics department in on the first floor.
