Hey gang -- here is a comment from Willie. I will post his attachments on Bb under Readings so that you can see them -- they are really interesting!

Dear LUCE Students and Faculty,

Great to meet all of you. Being your Toxic Tour Guide along the Historic River Road was a real treat for me.

After looking at everything you have done over the previous 14 days I wish something like this had been possible when I was a college student.

If you need anything else or if you are ever down here again please feel free to contact me. If you have the time we can see more of the Historic river road or possibly arrange another Toxic Tour.

Attached is a tour which I did for a group which met in Baton Rouge back in 2007. Some of the pictures I took of the EXXON explosion and fire which happened the morning of Christmas Eve in 1989. Also attached is a letter I wrote for Albertha Hasten during the fight over the proposed Shintech facility near Convent in St. James Parish. This is one of my favorite letters to the Editor. Many elected officials were a little more sensitive about social justice after this letter appeared in The advocate newspaper in Baton rouge.

The second attached letter is from Pat Melancon, who was the head of the local citizens group which successfully challenged Shintech in St. James Parish. I wrote many letters for individuals and groups over the years but these two were my favorites. The officials from Shintech and the state of Louisiana were shaken up by these two letters more than anything else that had happened in the local residents challenge of Shintech. What these letters say is that an individual can make a difference and Albertha and Pat definitely made a positive difference.

I hope the rest of your tour is as successful as the first 15 days.

Sincerely yours,

Willie
