Do You Understand

Since today was somewhat dreary, I decided to analyze a Matthea Harvey poem which I feel mirrors the pessimism many feel on such days.  This poem is entitled, “Do You Understand,” and despite its brevity, it is able to convey a deep sense of loss.  The poem uses the title as the first line, and then follows with describing that there will be no rainbow over the land.  I feel this is Harvey stating that perhaps things in the future will not get better, and there will not be a rainbow to signal the passage of the storm.  Albeit a troubling thought, the sentiment would hold true with the motif throughout Harvey’s latest collection Modern Life, as it frequently views the future through a less than flattering lens.  Although the poem is not online, I would like to once again recommend Harvey’s collection of poetry, Modern Life.
