Social Accents

February 14th, 2013

It’s interesting to see how people will change their speech based on what social group or community they are around at the current time. Friends has a ton of examples of this, like when Chandler always speaks in a British accent when Emily (from London) is around..

Or when Ross, who is from Long Island, adopts a British accent because he is nervous about teaching one of his classes..

They are two different instances, but each clip shows how someone’s speech can change just like that, given the social situation.

GREAT examples! So, why do you (anyone in the class) think Chandler speaks with a British accent? Are his reasons different than Ross’ reasons? What about Monica’s Irish accent and Rachel’s Indian accent????
