Final trip to Provence

Every student has some special memory of the final final trip to Provence.

Melynda :

On my vacation to Aix en Provence, I saw the gorgeous region of Cassis. In the morning, I was able to walk through the town market. One of the items that this regions is known for is their heavenly smelling lavender. Right on the beach of the Mediterranean Sea, one could not help but bath in the scent of the ocean. Not bad for my first time at the beach!

Ryan :

Provence is the most famous region in France with its unique scenery creating a part of that fame. Even if you can’t see it in the photo above, Provence has a reputation for very blue skies, which is one reason why Provence is depicted in many paintings. It is countryside with a lot of low-lying vegetation and trees without many leaves because of the makeup of the soil and the lack of rain. The region has a lot of wind because of the Mistral, which can create high-speed winds in the region. It is a beautiful countryside with a lot of character that helps to create the popularity of the region.

Josh:

Although it rained, I found Aix-en-Provence to be very pretty. As a city, it is vibrant, chic, and above all young. If you desire, you can buy only organic product. You have to rely on the frequent street markets, the grocery stores, and the street venders because the cost of living is quite expensive, but you can always support local producers. Having seen all of these shops and having spoken with a woman who sells organic soap, it seems to me that this city is very conscientious.

Sarah H:

During our visit to Provence we hiked in the Calanques. We started our adventure in the village of Cassis. Then we climbed the calaque called Port-Miou. The landscape was incredible and we all took many beautiful photos of the blue water (a blue similar to what you would find on a post card). We continued to walk until 12:30 or 1 when we stopped to eat a picnic of sandwiches we had brought from Aix. After we hiked a bit higher before turning around to return to Cassis. During our free time in Cassis the members of the group all explored different areas. Some people ate ice cream in a cafe while others rested on the beach. After, once we had returned to the bus, we were all very tired but we agreed that we had passed an agreeable day.

Megan :

The town of Cassis is a great place to visit, as well as an ancient fishing port. Walking

through the tiny town’s village streets, you stumble upon beautiful old buildings painted

in the beautiful pastel colors of the Provence region. The town boasts medieval

fountains, an open-air artists’ market, and a gorgeous harbor. Cassis used to be just a

small fishing port, but these smaller boats now share the harbor with some impressive

yachts and tourists boats that take people out to explore the calanques and the pristine

blue water of the Mediterranean.

Carina :

On the 3rd day of our vacation, we went to Sénanque Abbey, an abbey for Cistercian monks located between Aix-en-Provence and the town Roussillon. During our visit, we saw the monk’s room, the church, and the decision-making room. In particular, I was struck by how hard the life of a monk was in the past. Our guide told us that the monks of the middle ages slept on the ground on a straw mattress. Of course, there was no heating in that era, so the only comfort the monks had was that they slept on ground that had been cooked (which holds more heat). All the monks slept in the same room, and they only had little curtains around their mattress for privacy. In addition, during the summer, the monks would get up at 2 am! However, today the life of a monk isn’t so hard. All the monks have their own heated room with a bed.

Julia :

Completely different from any other town in France the bright and contrasting colors of Roussillon are nothing less than impressive. We walked through the ochre footpath to marvel at the natural pigmented formations that have existed since the prehistoric time. I didn’t like Roussillon because of its antiquity or for its UNESCO status, but for its natural and powerful beauty.

Beth:

I could not have imagined a better day for my birthday in the Calanques. The weather was beautiful with an amazing sky – it was a blue that you can only see in the Calanques. The hike was difficult at times with the rocks and the slopes, but it was worth it to see the views. At each turn the hills and the Mediterranean Sea seemed to be even more beautiful. When it was time for out picnic, we were very happy to eat and take a nap in the sun.

Mai-Anh:

My favorite activity during our voyage in Provence was definitely the hike in the Calanques. The colors of the Calanques were without equal: the bright blue-green of the water, the vibrant green of the trees, and the white of the cliffs combined to be a feast for the eyes. Furthermore, our guide expertly brought us to specific areas in the Calanques where the view left us speechless. We also passed a very pleasant lunch in picnicking and laying out in the sun. All-in-all, this hike was one of my favorite experiences in France and I would very much like to return to the Calanques and to Cassis in the summer when it must surely be even more magnificent.”

Melynda:

Pendent mes vacances à Aix en Provance, j’ai vu la belle région de CaSsis. Le matin, j’ai marché à travers le marché de la ville. L’un des produits qui est très connu DANS cette région est la lavande. De plus, directement sur la plage de la mer méditérranée, on ne pouvait pas s’empêcher de se baigner dans le parfum de la mer. Pas mal pour ma première fois à la plage!

Ryan:

La Provence est la région la plus célèbre de France et son paysage méditerranéen unique crée une part de cette célébrité. Même si on ne peut pas le voir dans la photo, le ciel en Provence a une réputation d’être très bleu, notamment en hiver et au printemps, qui est une raison pour laquelle la Provence est dans beaucoup de peintures. C’est un paysage avec beaucoup d’ herbes qui ne sont pas très grandes et les arbres n’ont pas beaucoup de feuilles à cause de la terre et du manque de l’eau. C’est une région avec beaucoup de vent grâce au mistral qui crée des vents importants dans la région. C’est une campagne très belle avec beaucoup de caractère qui aide à créer la renommée de la région.

Josh:

Bien qu’il ait plu, j’ai trouvé Aix-en-Provence très jolie. Elle est pleine de vie, chic, et surtout jeune. Si l’on veut, on ne peut acheter que des produits bios. On doit faire confiance aux marchés fréquents, aux épiceries, et aux vendeurs de rue parce que le coût de la vie est tellement cher, mais on peut toujours soutenir les producteurs locaux. En ayant vu tous ces magasins et en avant parlé avec une vendeuse de savon bio, il me semblait qu’elle était une ville très consciencieuse.

Sarah H:

Pendant notre séjour en Provence on a fait une randonnée dans les calanques. On a commencé notre excursion dans le village de Cassis. Après on a continué avec la calanque de Port-Miou. Le paysage était incroyable et on a tous pris de belles photos de la mer avec une eau bleue (mais un bleu comme on trouverait seulement sur une carte postale). On a continué de marcher jusqu’à 12 h 30 ou 13 h quand on a mangé un pique-nique qu’on vait apporté d’Aix. Après on a marché un peu encore et qu’on est redescendu pour explorer le village de Cassis. On a passé une heure libre à Cassis ou les membres du groupe ont fait des activités différentes. Quelques personnes ont mangé une glace dans un café et d’autres se sont reposées sur la plage. Après dans le bus, on était tous fatigués, mais c’était une journée très agréable.

Mai-Anh:

Mon activité préférée pendant notre voyage en Provence était certainement la randonnée dans les Calanques. Les couleurs des Calanques étaient sans égal : le bleu-vert brillant de l’eau, le vert vif des arbres, et le blanc des Calanques se combinent pour devenir un régal pour les yeux. De plus, notre guide a nous amené avec expertise dans les lieux où la vue nous laissait sans voix. On a également passé un très bon déjeuner en faisant un pique-nique et en nous allongeant sous le soleil. Somme toute, cette randonnée est une de mes expériences préférées en France et je veux bien retourner aux Calanques et à Cassis pendant l’été quand cela va être surement encore plus magnifique.

Megan :

La ville de Cassis est un formidable endroit à visiter, ainsi qu’un ancien port de pêche. En marchant à travers les rues du petit village, on voit quelques beaux anciens bâtiments, peints avec les couleurs pastels de la région de Provence. La ville possède des fontaines médiévales, un marché d’artistes en plein air, et un port magnifique. Cassis était seulement un petit port de pêche, mais maintenant les petits bateaux partagent la mer avec les yachts et bateaux touristiques que les gens prennent pour découvrir les calanques et l’eau bleue de la vierge Méditerranée.

Carina :

Le 3e jour de nos vacances, nous sommes allés à l’abbaye de Sénanque, une abbaye de moines cisterciens qui se trouve entre Aix-en-Provence et la ville de Roussillon. Pendant notre visite, on a vu la chambre des moines, l’église, et la salle de décision. J’ai été particulièrement frappée par la dure vie des moines, surtout dans le passé. Notre guide nous a expliqués que les moines du Moyens-Age dormaient par terre sur des matelas de paille. Bien sûr, il n’y avait pas de chauffage à cette époque-là, donc leur seul confort pendant l’hiver froid était le fait qu’ils dormaient sur la terre cuite (qui retient la chaleur). Ils dormaient tous dans la même chambre, et ils n’avaient que des petits rideaux autour de leur matelas pour garder une certaine intimité. En plus, pendant l’été les moines se levaient à 2 heures du matin ! Pourtant, aujourd’hui, la vie d’un moine est moins dure. Tous les moines de l’abbaye ont leur propre chambre chauffée avec un lit, et ils se lèvent à 4 heures du matin.

Julia:

Complètement unique de tout autre village en France, l’ocre de Roussillon nous impressionne avec ses couleurs vivantes et contrastantes. On s’est promené sur le Sentier des Ocres pour s’émerveiller des formations naturelles qui existent depuis la préhistoire. Le village de Roussillon ne m’a pas plu pour l’histoire ancienne ni pour ses titres d’UNESCO, il m’a plu pour ce qu’il est, pour sa beauté naturelle et impressionnante.

Beth:

Je ne pouvais pas avoir imaginé une meilleure journée pour mon anniversaire que de faire la randonnée dans les Calanques. Le temps était beau avec un ciel sensationnel – c’était un bleu que l’on ne voit que dans les Calanques. La randonnée était difficile parfois avec les pierres et un peu d’escalade mais cela valait la peine pour voir la vue. À chaque détour les collines et la mer méditerranée semblaient être plus belles encore. Quand c’était l’heure pour notre pique-nique, nous étions très contentes de manger et faire une sieste sous le soleil.

The United States is not the only country with presidential elections in 2012; France has them too. For my internship, I have the opportunity to work in a polling station, and here’s what I noticed for the April 23 elections:

– The voting process is very communal. When a person votes, he has a conversation with the people that are working there; it’s a social event! Also, instead of having absentee ballots, the French that cannot be present at their polling place on Election Day vote by procuration, which is giving the right to vote to someone else in your place. In this case, the person that cannot vote has to communicate his choice to the person to whom he has given procuration, an extremely personal choice in the United States. However, in France, one can discuss the election and personal choices regarding the elections pretty freely; it’s not as private.

– The votes are revealed publicly. At my polling place, when the voting had finished, the envelopes with the ballots inside were opened in front of a small crowd, which was open to the public. When the workers opened the envelopes, they said the name on the ballot inside out loud so that everyone present could hear the trends in that particular polling place at the same time.

But this process is going to continue; in France, the presidential elections use a two-step system. This means that the first election has over 2 candidates, and the purpose of this election is to take the two candidates with the most votes to go head to head against each other in the second election. The winner of this second election wins the presidency. The first election already happened and Nicolas Sarkozy and François Hollande are the candidates for the second election on May 7. Therefore, there will be another election and I can see the nuances between the two elections in a French presidential election.

Les Etats-Unis ne sont pas le seul pays qui a des élections présidentielles en 2012 ; la France en a aussi. Pour mon stage, j’ai eu l’opportunité de travailler dans un bureau de vote, et voilà ce que j’ai remarqué :

– Le processus de vote est très social. Quand un électeur vote, il parle beaucoup avec les gens qui travaillent dans le bureau de vote ; c’est un vrai événement social ! De plus, au lieu d’avoir les « absentee ballots », les français qui ne peuvent pas être présents au bureau de vote pour la journée des élections votent par procuration, c’est à dire ils donnent leur droit de vote à quelqu’un d’autre. Dans ce cas, la personne qui ne peut pas voter doit discuter de son choix avec la personne à laquelle elle a donné la procuration, un choix très personnel aux Etats-Unis. Cependant, en France, on peut discuter de l’élection et de son choix assez librement ; ce n’est pas un choix si privé.

– On dépouille les votes en public. A mon bureau de vote, quand le scrutin a été fini, les enveloppes avec les bulletins de vote ont été ouvertes devant un petit comité d’électeurs, et le dépouillement est ouvert à tous. Quand les travailleurs ont ouvert les enveloppes, ils ont indiqué le nom du candidat sur le papier pour que le public puisse l’entendre, et ils pouvaient voir les tendances du bureau de vote au moment où le dépouillement se faisait.

Mais ce processus sera de nouveau mis en oeuvre ; dans ses élections présidentielles, la France utilise un système à deux tours. Le premier tour est déjà passé, mais le deuxième tour sera le 7 mai. Donc, on va le refaire, et je pourrai voir les nuances entre les deux tours d’une élection présidentielle en France.
