The Atlanta Braves have decided that they will stay with tradition when it comes to their logo on their hats. After much deliberation and a leaked picture of a uniform change they have decided that it would be best to keep the patented A on the hat instead of the new Screaming Indian Head. This for many reason but in the end Braves President John Schuerlotz said “I like the selection we made this year.”
When thinking about this issue in terms of our class I thought it fight in because from a policy standpoint we see the Braves making a decision that would have affected their marketing branch. I also believe that the Braves stayed with their old symbol because of the heat they may of faced from the Native American Community. Even though they claim their new potential symbol was not a spite at them a screaming Indian head may have caused some controversy. This would have been a problem for the Braves and an issue they could simply avoid.

Justin,
I think a lot of the claims you have made are absolutely valid. Clearly, the President and all of the members of the organization involved in this decision had to do a cost benefit analysis on a wide variety of levels. For instance, if I were in this position as President of the club, the immediate thought in my mind would have been, “How much will it cost to make this change?” Furthermore, not only would I want to know whether or not the general public and fan base would want to buy the new gear, but I would also want to predict sales based on the economy and the disposable income that the nearby fan base may or may not have at this day in age.
As a baseball fan, I found this topic very interesting. Often, when thinking of a sports team, their logo comes to mind, with the Braves, most think of there signature “A”. The outcry over the logo I feel might be overstated, especially since the Indian nature of the team’s mascot as well as many references to Indian “aggressiveness” can be seen just by watching a Braves game. Also I am very curious as to what the cost of reverting back to the old logo is, especially since it seems as it was done quickly to avoid potential scandal.
I definetly agree that the Braves President may have recieved bad press by changing the logo to a screaming indian head. Natives Americans and others may have found it offensive to Native American culture. This could have potentially created negative feedback for the Braves Organization that could have cost the organization fans which would have lowered their profits. It would also be expenisve for the team to change all of their athletic equipment and merchandise; and it would not make sense to invest in a process of change when people find the change offensive.
