Mariinskaya.

In the Uhlan regiment, one soldier from the reinforcements has switched to the Red Army’s side; another wanted to surrender, and he tried to convince the older soldiers, but his colleagues beat him to death over it. Incidentally, they say that the Red Army is not killing or looting—only taking our men’s weapons and letting them go.

Cossack Settlement of Bolotnaya.

For the first time in my life, I won 5,000 rubles playing cards, and another 31,000 on credit.

We wanted to take the offensive, but it is unlikely to succeed. Looting is going on all around us. I am unashamedly paying for everything with my winnings, provoking the astonishment of the local civilians. I wonder how all this will end? For the time being, I am buying as much meat, butter, and sugar as I want.

I have submitted my assignment report and am going to the front headquarters. I received a gold watch worth 23,000 rubles as payment of the debt. This is terrible, but there is nothing I can do about it. In total, I have 45,000 rubles in cash, and I do not know if they will last me very long. Tomsk has been taken by the rebels. I am living as if in the woods: Where is the front? Who is in charge? Everything is in darkness.

I visited the general on duty at the front. He said, “You did not come to see me. Everything now is uncertain. If you report to me, I must appoint you to the 1st Army, or I can send you to the 2nd Army.”

Gangs of thieves surround us on both sides. 2 officers and 1 soldier were killed in the night.

Misfortune has befallen me. I have lost my wallet, my bonds, and—most importantly—my documents and certificates.

It seems to me that this whole affair will soon come to an end. Seeing as generals like Evert are serving in the Red Army, the officers are beginning to lose their understanding of what is happening and what we are fighting for. It seems to me that our whole situation must become clear by the end of January, and if I survive, I will be home no earlier than March.
