As we all prepare to return to campus for the fall semester in a few weeks, I wanted to reach out about how Academic Technology can support you and your students. I am your Academic Technology liaison, and I can assist you with technology-related projects you might be considering for your classes. I can also assist with using Moodle, our learning management system.<\/p>\n<h2>WHAT\u2019S NEW<\/h2>\n<h3><strong>Gradescope<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Gradescope is a product that will help speed up grading as well as help you provide quality and consistent feedback. We will first be introducing it to faculty in math and the sciences since those are departments where Gradescope is popular at other schools. We\u2019ll grow out from there. If you are not in one of those areas but would like to try Gradescope anyway, please let us know. If you\u2019d like a preview of Gradescope, <a href=\"https:\/\/gradescope.wistia.com\/medias\/rbq3u3lqvp\">click here for a 15 minute demo video.<\/a><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Willoughby<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>This August, our team collaborated with the library to run the 2023 Willoughby Institute for a number of faculty. The focus was on Universal Design for Learning along with new tools in digital storytelling, ai, story maps, and virtual reality. <a href=\"mailto:jonesmar@dickinson.edu\">Marni Jones<\/a> and <a href=\"mailto:dannibaj@dickinson.edu\">James D\u2019Annibale<\/a> are planning on hosting further UDL workshops in the near future.<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re hoping to learn about UDL and how technology can help with accessibility, please reach out to James at <a href=\"mailto:dannibaj@dickinson.edu\">dannibaj@dickinson.edu<\/a><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Moodle Upgrade<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Moodle was upgraded to version 4.1 at the end of July. We\u2019ve prepared a <a href=\"https:\/\/dson.hosted.panopto.com\/Panopto\/Pages\/Viewer.aspx?pid=c5c8c39e-87bb-47ce-8445-b0580133e820\">video playlist highlighting<\/a> the changes you should be aware of. The main changes include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A more modern look.<\/li>\n<li>Collapsible course index for easier navigation and less scrolling.<\/li>\n<li>Improved drag and drop course materials from index to anywhere on course page.<\/li>\n<li>Ability to create a customized view on My Courses page.<\/li>\n<li>Simplified \u201cCourse reuse\u201d function under \u201cmore\u201d in main course menu to copy content from old courses to new.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><strong>AI<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>AI has continued to evolve over the summer.\u00a0 Academic Technology encourages faculty to contact <a href=\"mailto:dannibaj@dickinson.edu\">James<\/a> or <a href=\"mailto:bryantt@dickinson.edu\">Todd<\/a> for support of possible uses in classes and scholarship.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/document\/d\/1UV_D_lg7JizboVc62RV1Vra9YN_fI77XPVCPnteG_uw\/edit?usp=sharing\">Notes<\/a> on the AI workshop in Willoughby<\/li>\n<li>Locally hosted open source instance of <a href=\"http:\/\/stablediffusion.dickinson.edu\">Stable Diffusion<\/a> in the makerspace. The link to Stable Diffusion only works while you are on-campus.<\/li>\n<li>Integration of text to image generative AI in our subscription to Photoshop<\/li>\n<li>Text generated AI is publicly available via <a href=\"https:\/\/chat.openai.com\/\">OpenAI<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/en-us\/edge\/features\/bing-chat\">Bing<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/bard.google.com\/\">Bard<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/claude.ai\/login\">Claude<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Locally created <a href=\"https:\/\/chatbot.dickinson.edu\/\">Japanese AI chatbots<\/a> at Dickinson. (fyi, in development only available on campus)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><strong>Media Center Spaces and Equipment<\/strong><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ol>\n<li>Quest 2 (Virtual Reality headset) \u2013 stop down and try an immersive experience<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h3><strong>Classroom Equipment Upgrades<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Six classrooms were upgraded to have full-room microphones and two PTZ cameras to make web-conferencing and lecture capturing easier and more appealing.
