On Thursday, October 21, 2021 at noon, Xenia Makosky, the President of the Arabic Club at Dickinson discussed one of the most prestigious and highly competitive educational and cultural programs of the US Department of Education: The Critical Language Scholarship (CLS) Program. As a recipient of this intensive language and cultural immersion program in the summer of 2021, Xeni (Zeena) shared her personal experience while providing useful tips on the application process and answering student questions.
Everyone enjoyed pizza while learning about this educational opportunity and how to maximize one’s chances of being selected.
Under this program, undergraduate and graduate university students spend eight to ten weeks abroad studying one of 15 critical languages (of which Arabic is one). The program includes intensive language instruction and structured cultural enrichment experiences designed to promote rapid language gains.
As this program coincided with Zeena’s 20th birthday, we later got to celebrate with some of her colleagues and wish her Sana Hilwa! Here are some photos!
