On the\u00a0second anniversary of UQ’s Centre for Marine Science<\/strong>\u00a0Professor Carlos Duarte is giving\u00a0a special seminar on the role seagrass meadows\u00a0 in mitigating the effects of climate change.\u00a0 <\/strong>Having just returned from Brisbane, our research group will miss the opportunity to hear this wonderful seminar.\u00a0 But\u00a0it’s worth adding our voices to Prof. Duarte’s when he\u00a0reminds us that\u00a0“seagrass meadows are important ecosystems in the coastal ocean, but….are in global decline….they perform important functions, which are relevant to mitigate climate change and adapt locally to climate change<\/em>.”<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>That’s right, seagrass meadows can counteract ocean acidification (well, during the daytime anyway).\u00a0 An excellent example of this is a recent paper by Richard Unsworth and coworkers.\u00a0 This is one of our recent favorites because it describes in detail what we observe\u00a0each summer when we deply our FOCE system in seagrass patches and monitor CO2 and pH inside and outside those areas.\u00a0 This figure is from their open acccess paper in Environmental Research Letters.\u00a0\u00a0The link follows.\u00a0<\/p>\n
