The Comparative Black Liberation research team videotaped oral history and ethnomusicological interviews in and around both King William’s Town, South Africa<\/a><\/u>, and Coahoma County, Mississippi<\/a><\/u>.\u00a0 They interviewed people who experienced the anti-apartheid struggle and Black Consciousness Movement in South Africa, and the Civil Rights Movement in Mississippi.\u00a0 These interviews provide an often un-articulated perspective into these important transitional times.<\/p>\n

In South Africa, the research team worked in the archives<\/u> <\/a>of University of Fort Hare<\/a><\/u>, South Africa’s oldest historically black university and home to an expansive Black Consciousness collection. In their research, they sought out information that would inform their particular section of the project: liberation philosophy<\/u><\/a>, lived experiences<\/a><\/u>, memorials<\/a><\/u>, or music<\/u><\/a>.<\/p>\n
