This article starts with a characterization of \u201cconsumerism\u201d and the idea of \u201cthe consumer.\u201d It then explores Buddhist attitudes on wealth and \u201cBuddhist economics\u201d before drawing on these to develop a critical assessment of consumerism as an ineffective and wasteful route to human happiness. <\/p>\n
