An\u0101layo<br \/>\nUniversity of Hamburg and Dharma Drum Institute of Liberal Arts<\/p>\n<p>In the present article I study the <em>Ekottarika-\u0101gama<\/em> version of a past life of the Buddha as a princess.  I begin with some general observations on the gender of the Buddha\u2019s past lives as reported in <em>j\u0101taka<\/em> narratives, followed by a translation of the relevant section from the <em>Ekottarika-\u0101gama<\/em>.
