It explores two ways to generate a \u201cflawless and perfect\u201d M\u016blasarv\u0101stiv\u0101da <em>bhik\u1e63u\u1e47\u012b<\/em> vow, either by M\u016blasarv\u0101stiv\u0101da monks alone or by M\u016blasarv\u0101stiv\u0101da monks with Dharmaguptaka nuns (\u201cecumenical\u201d ordination). The first approach is based on a <em>Vinaya<\/em> passage which traditionally is taken as the <em>Word of the Buddha<\/em>, but which, from a historical-critical point of view, is dubious. The second approach is not explicitly represented in the <em>Vinaya<\/em> but involves \u201cre-reading\u201d or \u201cre-thinking\u201d it with a critical-constructive attitude (\u201ctheological\u201d approach).
