Kapstein<br \/>\nThe University of Chicago<\/p>\n<p>The present review article discusses aspects of Paul Williams\u2019s excellent and highly recommended book, which focuses on the question of \u201creflexive awareness\u201d (Tib. <em>rang rig<\/em>, Skt. <em>svasa\u1e43vitti\u1e25, svasa\u1e43vedana<\/em>) in Tibetan M\u0101dhyamika thought. In particular, I am concerned with his characterization of <em>so so rang rig ye shes<\/em> and its relation to Rdzogs-chen teaching, and his notions of the <em>gzhan stong<\/em> doctrine and its place in the intellectual life of Far-eastern Tibet.
