More than one third of all patients who are enrolled in hospice die within the first week, and many of those patients die within the first 48 hours. Overall, half of those who are enrolled in hospice die within the first 14 days.<\/p>\n<p>The fact is that many patients live quite awhile after being referred to hospice if the decision is made earlier in the dying process. The figure below\u00a0charts the mean length of stay for patients in hospice by disease category.
