{"id":52,"date":"2007-10-30T10:15:16","date_gmt":"2007-10-30T15:15:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/carlislehistory\/?p=52"},"modified":"2007-10-30T10:15:16","modified_gmt":"2007-10-30T15:15:16","slug":"antique-shops-and-tattoo-parlors","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/carlislehistory\/2007\/10\/30\/antique-shops-and-tattoo-parlors\/","title":{"rendered":"Antique Shops and Tattoo Parlors"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In a chapter titled \u201cCommunity Life,\u201d from Stacy Mitchell\u2019s book <em>Big Box Swindle, <\/em>the following\u00a0passage immediately made me think\u00a0of downtown Carlisle\u2019s landscape due to similar characteristics mentioned in the book and evident in the town:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMega-retailers have not only produced landscapes that are remarkably inhospitable to community life, but they have also severely compromised the vitality of our downtowns and older, \u2018mixed-use\u2019 neighborhoods by undermining the local businesses that were once their lifeblood. Walking is no longer appealing if most of the worthwhile destinations have closed and the streets are a dreary series of vacant and half-used storefronts\u2026 \u2018Now there \u2019s no one. The storefronts downtown are still occupied, but it\u2019s antique shops and tattoo parlors\u2019\u201d (95).<\/p>\n<p>My intention is not to make Carlisle sound \u201cbad,\u201d nor do I want to imply that I think the downtown area is \u201cinhospitable.\u201d However, the things pointed out in the selected passage are visible in Carlisle. The big-box stores such as Wal-mart, Home Depot, and Lowe\u2019s in Carlisle certainly took business away from the downtown are and have thus severely affected the towns\u2019 prosperity and business. Going along with the rest of the passage, I am wondering:<\/p>\n<p>1. Did sidewalk traffic in downtown Carlisle change once the big-box stores arrived? Was there even a lot of walking around the downtown area before the big-box store phenomenon?<\/p>\n<p>2. There are two tattoo parlors and many antique shops in downtown Carlisle. Will they be able to survive in the future? How many antique shops can there be in one town before business slows down?
