She was born in the year 1889 in North Dakota. Her mother was from Canada and was named Julia M. Venne while her father was from North Dakota and was named William Jerome. The <a href=\"http:\/\/search.ancestrylibrary.com\/cgi-bin\/sse.dll?_phsrc=YFb4&amp;_phstart=successSource&amp;usePUBJs=true&amp;gss=angs-g&amp;new=1&amp;rank=1&amp;msT=1&amp;gsfn=Elmira&amp;gsfn_x=0&amp;gsln=Jerome&amp;gsln_x=0&amp;msypn__ftp=Fort%20Totten,%20Benson,%20North%20Dakota,%20USA&amp;msypn=59636&amp;msypn_PInfo=8-%7C0%7C1652393%7C0%7C2%7C0%7C37%7C0%7C280%7C59636%7C0%7C0%7C&amp;catbucket=rstp&amp;MSAV=0&amp;MSV=0&amp;uidh=zd3&amp;pcat=ROOT_CATEGORY&amp;h=20888380&amp;dbid=7884&amp;indiv=1&amp;ml_rpos=1\">1910 U.S. Census<\/a> indicates that Elmira lived in a household of about thirty people before she was married. However, there is a discrepancy between Elmira\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/search.ancestrylibrary.com\/cgi-bin\/sse.dll?_phsrc=YFb3&amp;_phstart=successSource&amp;usePUBJs=true&amp;gss=angs-g&amp;new=1&amp;rank=1&amp;msT=1&amp;gsfn=Elmira&amp;gsfn_x=0&amp;gsln=Jerome&amp;gsln_x=0&amp;msypn__ftp=Poplar,%20Roosevelt,%20Montana,%20USA&amp;msypn=57267&amp;msypn_PInfo=8-%7C0%7C1652393%7C0%7C2%7C0%7C29%7C0%7C2557%7C57267%7C0%7C0%7C&amp;catbucket=rstp&amp;MSAV=0&amp;MSV=0&amp;uidh=zd3&amp;pcat=ROOT_CATEGORY&amp;h=244624&amp;dbid=60062&amp;indiv=1&amp;ml_rpos=1\">birth year<\/a> and the age of her <a href=\"http:\/\/carlisleindian.dickinson.edu\/student_files\/elmira-jerome-student-information-card\">start date<\/a> at the Indian school. In actuality, Elmira started the school at age 13. Elmira seemed to have done well within the school because a record from an admin in <a href=\"http:\/\/carlisleindian.dickinson.edu\/student_files\/elmira-jerome-student-information-card\">her file<\/a> stated she had \u201cexcellent\u201d character. Likewise, she had well-developed reading and writing skills, according to the <a href=\"http:\/\/search.ancestrylibrary.com\/cgi-bin\/sse.dll?_phsrc=YFb4&amp;_phstart=successSource&amp;usePUBJs=true&amp;gss=angs-g&amp;new=1&amp;rank=1&amp;msT=1&amp;gsfn=Elmira&amp;gsfn_x=0&amp;gsln=Jerome&amp;gsln_x=0&amp;msypn__ftp=Fort%20Totten,%20Benson,%20North%20Dakota,%20USA&amp;msypn=59636&amp;msypn_PInfo=8-%7C0%7C1652393%7C0%7C2%7C0%7C37%7C0%7C280%7C59636%7C0%7C0%7C&amp;catbucket=rstp&amp;MSAV=0&amp;MSV=0&amp;uidh=zd3&amp;pcat=ROOT_CATEGORY&amp;h=20888380&amp;dbid=7884&amp;indiv=1&amp;ml_rpos=1\">1910 US Census<\/a>. During her attendance at the school, aside from writing \u201cA Legend of the Pottawatomi\u201d for <em>The Indian Craftsman<\/em>, she likewise wrote <a href=\"https:\/\/books.google.com\/books?id=nZVkcOAuYhgC&amp;pg=PA233&amp;lpg=PA233&amp;dq=Elmira+Jerome+chippewa&amp;source=bl&amp;ots=x8YaN-S3a8&amp;sig=HquZDxkSeVS7IYaMKpYMfvfFlqg&amp;hl=en&amp;sa=X&amp;ved=0ahUKEwi3sOi6ocDTAhUi5oMKHdHTAfwQ6AEIMzAD#v=onepage&amp;q=Elmira%20Jerome%20chippewa&amp;f=false\">four pieces<\/a>\u00a0for <em>The Carlisle Arrow. <\/em>These pieces were entitled \u201cBiography of Susan Longworth\u201d (1907), \u201cThe Munsee Indians\u201d (1908), \u201cA Pottawatomie Tradition\u201d (1909) and \u201cWeaving, Basketry and Pottery\u201d (1909) (233). At the time of 1910 U.S. Census, she, at 22 years old, was still unmarried and still lived in Fort Totten, Benson, North Dakota. Four years later, at 26 years old, she <a href=\"http:\/\/search.ancestrylibrary.com\/cgi-bin\/sse.dll?_phsrc=YFb3&amp;_phstart=successSource&amp;usePUBJs=true&amp;gss=angs-g&amp;new=1&amp;rank=1&amp;msT=1&amp;gsfn=Elmira&amp;gsfn_x=0&amp;gsln=Jerome&amp;gsln_x=0&amp;msypn__ftp=Poplar,%20Roosevelt,%20Montana,%20USA&amp;msypn=57267&amp;msypn_PInfo=8-%7C0%7C1652393%7C0%7C2%7C0%7C29%7C0%7C2557%7C57267%7C0%7C0%7C&amp;catbucket=rstp&amp;MSAV=0&amp;MSV=0&amp;uidh=zd3&amp;pcat=ROOT_CATEGORY&amp;h=244624&amp;dbid=60062&amp;indiv=1&amp;ml_rpos=1\">married<\/a>\u00a0Louis Sharlette on February 4, 1913 in Culbertsent, Valley, Montana.
