{"id":532,"date":"2017-05-15T06:31:24","date_gmt":"2017-05-15T06:31:24","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/carlisleindianindustrialschoolwritinganthology\/?p=532"},"modified":"2017-05-15T18:12:27","modified_gmt":"2017-05-15T18:12:27","slug":"biography-9","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/carlisleindianindustrialschoolwritinganthology\/2017\/05\/15\/biography-9\/","title":{"rendered":"Biography"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Louis Runnels was a student of the Carlisle Indian school from 1902 to 1911. \u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/carlisleindian.dickinson.edu\/sites\/all\/files\/docs-ephemera\/NARA_1327_b139_f5509.pdf\">Runnels<\/a> was a member of the Sanpoil tribe, which is located currently on the <a href=\"http:\/\/colville.whydevelop.com\/demographics.php\">Colville Reservation<\/a> in Washington State.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-873 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/carlisleindianindustrialschoolwritinganthology\/files\/2017\/05\/Colville_Reservation_map_outline-300x219.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"219\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/carlisleindianindustrialschoolwritinganthology\/files\/2017\/05\/Colville_Reservation_map_outline-300x219.png 300w, https:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/carlisleindianindustrialschoolwritinganthology\/files\/2017\/05\/Colville_Reservation_map_outline.png 632w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>While not much is known about his early life, some things can be seen learned from his <a href=\"http:\/\/carlisleindian.dickinson.edu\/sites\/all\/files\/docs-ephemera\/NARA_1327_b139_f5509.pdf\">records.<\/a>\u00a0 He was born on <a href=\"http:\/\/carlisleindian.dickinson.edu\/sites\/all\/files\/docs-ephemera\/NARA_1327_b139_f5509.pdf#page=4&amp;zoom=auto,-361,737\">July 15th, 1886<\/a>.\u00a0 He was considered to be \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/carlisleindian.dickinson.edu\/sites\/all\/files\/docs-ephemera\/NARA_1327_b139_f5509.pdf#page=4&amp;zoom=auto,-361,737\">half-blooded<\/a>,\u201d as his father was a white man by the name of George W. Runnels, and his mother, Ellen Runnels, was a woman from the Sanpoil tribe.\u00a0 Runnels had several brothers and sisters, such as <a href=\"http:\/\/carlisleindian.dickinson.edu\/sites\/all\/files\/docs-ephemera\/NARA_1327_b032_f1523.pdf\">Tommy Runnels<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/carlisleindian.dickinson.edu\/sites\/all\/files\/docs-ephemera\/NARA_1327_b032_f1522.pdf\">Hiram B. Runnels<\/a>.\u00a0 It can be seen from his records that he was raised <a href=\"http:\/\/carlisleindian.dickinson.edu\/sites\/all\/files\/docs-ephemera\/NARA_1327_b139_f5509.pdf#page=1&amp;zoom=auto,-242,419\">Catholic<\/a>, a common occurrence for most children raised on the reservation after 1872.\u00a0 It is believed that Runnels lived on the reservation for a few years, as <a href=\"http:\/\/carlisleindian.dickinson.edu\/sites\/all\/files\/docs-ephemera\/NARA_1327_b139_f5509.pdf#page=4&amp;zoom=auto,-18,384\">his school records<\/a> indicate that he attended two different schools there. \u00a0In 1902, Runnels began attending the Carlisle Indian school at the <a href=\"http:\/\/carlisleindian.dickinson.edu\/sites\/all\/files\/docs-ephemera\/NARA_1327_b139_f5509.pdf#page=1&amp;zoom=auto,-111,724\">age of 16<\/a>, and stayed enrolled in the school for roughly 5 years before being \u201cdischarged\u201d in 1907.\u00a0 After a little more than a year, Runnels would go on to <a href=\"http:\/\/carlisleindian.dickinson.edu\/sites\/all\/files\/docs-ephemera\/NARA_1327_b139_f5509.pdf#page=2&amp;zoom=auto,-253,710\">re-enroll in the school<\/a>, and would stay enrolled until he graduated in 1911 at the age of 25. \u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/carlisleindian.dickinson.edu\/sites\/all\/files\/docs-ephemera\/NARA_1327_b139_f5509.pdf#page=10&amp;zoom=auto,-151,3\">From his files<\/a>, it can be seen that Runnels was a student of good conduct and scholarship, who had an interest and <a href=\"http:\/\/carlisleindian.dickinson.edu\/sites\/all\/files\/docs-ephemera\/NARA_1327_b139_f5509.pdf#page=14&amp;zoom=auto,-166,434\">possible talent for business<\/a>. \u00a0After graduating, he would go on to attend the \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/carlisleindian.dickinson.edu\/sites\/all\/files\/docs-ephemera\/NARA_1327_b139_f5509.pdf#page=16&amp;zoom=auto,-270,216\">Blair Business College<\/a>\u201d in Spokane, Washington, and another school in Keller, Washington.\u00a0 The order in which he attended these two schools is unknown.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-880 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/carlisleindianindustrialschoolwritinganthology\/files\/2017\/05\/letterfromrunnels-283x300.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"283\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/carlisleindianindustrialschoolwritinganthology\/files\/2017\/05\/letterfromrunnels-283x300.png 283w, https:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/carlisleindianindustrialschoolwritinganthology\/files\/2017\/05\/letterfromrunnels.png 350w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 283px) 100vw, 283px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Runnels submitted the story <i>The Struggle Against Darkness<\/i> in <a href=\"http:\/\/carlisleindian.dickinson.edu\/sites\/all\/files\/docs-publications\/RedMan_4_1compress.pdf\">the September 1911 edition of <i>The Red Man and Helper<\/i><\/a>. \u00a0Based upon the publication date, it is believed that Runnels submitted the story as an alumnus, as he graduated several months prior in <a href=\"http:\/\/carlisleindian.dickinson.edu\/sites\/all\/files\/docs-ephemera\/NARA_1327_b139_f5509.pdf#page=1&amp;zoom=auto,-242,10\">April, 1911<\/a>.\u00a0 Given this information, it can be assumed that Runnels was acting as a Tribal Educator, as he sent in the work to have readers learn about his tribe.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Louis Runnels was a student of the Carlisle Indian school from 1902 to 1911. \u00a0Runnels was a member of the Sanpoil tribe, which is located currently on the Colville Reservation in Washington State.
