This\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/indiancountrymedianetwork.com\/history\/events\/ulysses-s-grant-mass-genocide-through-permanent-peace-policy\/\">Peace Policy<\/a>\u00a0called for the relocation of Indians from their ancestral homes to allocated pieces of land dictated by the American Government. Christian men were appointed as Indian Agents hoping that they would &#8220;assimilate Indians&#8221;\u00a0by instilling moral and converting them\u00a0to\u00a0Christianity and the Western way of life. These agents were very corrupt and disregarded the American Indian way of life all in the name of &#8220;civilizing&#8221; people.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Later this policy was replaced by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ourdocuments.gov\/doc.php?flash=true&amp;doc=50\">Dawes Act<\/a> or the General Allotment Act in 1887<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ourdocuments.gov\/doc.php?flash=true&amp;doc=50\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-652 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/carlisleindianindustrialschoolwritinganthology\/files\/2017\/05\/Screen-Shot-2017-05-14-at-8.22.47-PM-216x300.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"216\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/carlisleindianindustrialschoolwritinganthology\/files\/2017\/05\/Screen-Shot-2017-05-14-at-8.22.47-PM-216x300.png 216w, https:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/carlisleindianindustrialschoolwritinganthology\/files\/2017\/05\/Screen-Shot-2017-05-14-at-8.22.47-PM.png 527w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 216px) 100vw, 216px\" \/><\/a>This act divided the previous reservation lands into 160 acres for each tribe and then smaller portions from that were given\u00a0to\u00a0individual Native Americans to cultivate and in exchange would receive full &#8220;rights&#8221; as US citizens. Having the protection of citizenship was a strong motivator for many and many tribes were disbanded as result. Those who took the allotment offer were isolated from their tribal ways and assimilating them into the white society became much easier. Also their\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">mobility were greatly limited, because the Act required them\u00a0to remain on their lands for at least twenty-five years. Many tribes <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hindawi.com\/journals\/janthro\/2011\/549521\/\">lost millions of acres of land<\/a> due to this allotment policy because the\u00a0remaining reservation lands from the 160 acres were\u00a0sold to European settlers that wanted to settle the West. The funds from this <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nebraskastudies.org\/0700\/frameset_reset.html?http:\/\/www.nebraskastudies.org\/0700\/stories\/0701_0143.html\">sale<\/a> was said to be used for the establishment of Indian schools all around the country in order to help them assimilate. These new &#8220;available&#8221; lands attracted more white settlers and made coast-to-coast\u00a0railroads possible to be built. Certain territories, such as Oklahoma, were declared by the government to be available for settlement regardless of the Native American tribes that were already on it.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-705\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/carlisleindianindustrialschoolwritinganthology\/files\/2017\/05\/Screen-Shot-2017-05-14-at-9.09.14-PM.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"892\" height=\"671\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/carlisleindianindustrialschoolwritinganthology\/files\/2017\/05\/Screen-Shot-2017-05-14-at-9.09.14-PM.png 892w, https:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/carlisleindianindustrialschoolwritinganthology\/files\/2017\/05\/Screen-Shot-2017-05-14-at-9.09.14-PM-300x226.png 300w, https:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/carlisleindianindustrialschoolwritinganthology\/files\/2017\/05\/Screen-Shot-2017-05-14-at-9.09.14-PM-768x578.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 892px) 100vw, 892px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bia.gov\/WhoWeAre\/BIA\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Bureau of Indian Affairs<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> or the BIA, a branch of the Federal Government were the federal regulators and legislators of life on the reservation. Agents from the BIA were inserted into reservations to be in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.americansc.org.uk\/Online\/indians.htm\">control of assimilation\u00a0<\/a>and many other aspects of life such as the schools, distributing supplies from the government, dispensing justice, and much more. All of this power and control made them basically replace the tribal governmental system\u00a0and gave\u00a0them a lot of power to exploit on the Native Americans. The BIA often withheld\u00a0much needed resources,\u00a0in order to force the tribes to\u00a0do what they wanted.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The main policies towards the Native Americans from the late 1800s to the early 1900s can be summarized as attempting\u00a0to undermine the power of tribal leaders, the tribal system of law and to completely assimilate them into the white\u00a0society. Those who did not had no land, no resources, no protection and no support systems.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;It has become the settled policy of the Government to break up reservations, destroy tribal relations, settle Indians upon their own homesteads, incorporate them into the national life, and deal with them not as nations or tribes or bands, but as individual citizens&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right\">&#8211;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nebraskastudies.org\/0700\/frameset_reset.html?http:\/\/www.nebraskastudies.org\/0700\/stories\/0701_0143.html\">Commissioner of Indian Affairs Thomas J. Morgan 1890<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Kiowa Nation was one of the tribes surrounding Oklahoma area that was heavily effected by the land negotiations. In 1867, a\u00a0year before Delos Lone Wolf was born, the Kiowas signed the <a href=\"http:\/\/plainshumanities.unl.edu\/encyclopedia\/doc\/egp.na.055\">Treaty of Medicine Lodge Creek<\/a> which agreed that they would enter a reservation located in Oklahoma. After few years of bison extinction and human losses due to war, the Kiowas were very much dependent on the US government for subsidies. The Kiowas went from great hunters and warriors to having much of their landholdings sold off to white settlers and being dependent on outside assistance.
