Hosted on campus\u2014and attended by nearly 100 undergraduates and 15 faculty members from across the country\u2014the three-day annual conference featured competitions, presentations and an\u00a0exploration of\u00a0the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.troutgallery.org\/\">Trout Gallery<\/a>&#8216;s classical collections.<\/p>\n<p>In her opening remarks, President Margee Ensign posited that the vast growth in classical scholarship over the past half century is a sign of the strength of the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.dickinson.edu\/liberalarts\">liberal arts<\/a>\u00a0as well as the foundation upon which Dickinson was built.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Enlightenment intellectuals [like Benjamin Rush] who led our revolution and the creation of our new nation knew that the writers of Greece and Rome had thought and written so deeply and carefully about the\u00a0<em>polis<\/em>(city-state) and about\u00a0<em>civitas<\/em>\u00a0(citizenship), had examined and explored those issues of morality, of psychology and of community, of civic responsibility and governance, which continue to engage and perplex us to this day,&#8221; she said.\u00a0&#8220;It is no accident that the study of classical languages and literatures have been continuously taught at Dickinson over its entire history.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The conference, organized by\u00a0Assistant Professor of Classical Studies\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dickinson.edu\/site\/custom_scripts\/dc_faculty_profile_index.php?fac=farrings\">Scott Farrington<\/a>, opened with a quiz-bowl style contest through which teams from various colleges put their knowledge of classical studies to the test in Allison Hall&#8217;s Great Room. Next, research took center stage, with student presentations:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>John James, Hillsdale College:\u00a0\u201cEmotional Evocation and the Psychology of Sign: Gorgias\u2019 Response to Questions of Communication in Helen\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Sophia Decker, University of Kentucky:\u00a0\u201cDorians Are Allowed to Speak Doric: Theocritus\u2019 Idyll XV in the Context of Panhellenization\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Aaron Romanowski, Beta Psi at Rhodes College: \u201cThe Use of the Cult of the Saints in the Milan Basilica Crisis of 385 CE\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Katie Hillery, Hillsdale College: \u201cDeveloping an Eschatological Narrative: An Interpretation of Via Latina\u2019s \u2018Hercules Cycle\u2019 Through the Eyes of the Late Antique Roman Viewer.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Rounding out the activities were a\u00a0Latin declamation contest, a vase-painting workshop led by Assistant Professor of\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.dickinson.edu\/homepage\/124\/art_and_art_history\">Art and Art History<\/a>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dickinson.edu\/site\/custom_scripts\/dc_faculty_profile_index.php?fac=engr\">Rachel Eng<\/a>, lectures on Caesar and the Battle of Alesia as well as mythology&#8217;s connections to astronomy\u00a0and a presentation of some of the &#8220;classical treasures&#8221; in the Trout Gallery&#8217;s collections\u2014including a chunk of the Parthenon and a denarius of Septimius Severus.<\/p>\n<p>To\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dickinson.edu\/site\/custom_scripts\/dc_faculty_profile_index.php?fac=mastrang\">Marc Mastrangelo<\/a>, professor of classical studies, the event does more than illustrate that\u00a0the classics are thriving and growing; it places\u00a0Dickinson at the heart of the movement.\u00a0&#8220;Dickinson&#8217;s ability to attract such a conference,&#8221; he said,\u00a0&#8220;reflects the fact that we have one of the leading undergraduate departments in the country.&#8221;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Re-posted from the main Dickinson College website here,\u00a0\u00a0April 11, 2018 Dickinson College&#8217;s\u00a0Department of Classical Studies\u00a0recently explored\u00a0everything from the\u00a0Hercules cycle to\u00a0Caesar and the Battle of Alesia during the national conference of the Eta Sigma Phi classics honor society.
