It\u2019s a particle, one of the only ones in Latin. Either translate it \u201cyes\u201d or \u201c(it\u2019s) true\u201d or don\u2019t translate it at all. It implies or points forward to a contrast, usually marked by the word&nbsp;<em>sed<\/em><em>&nbsp;<\/em>(but). For example, the sentence&nbsp;<em>homo stultus quidem est, sed bonus<\/em>&nbsp;means \u201cThe guy is an idiot, it\u2019s true, but he\u2019s good.\u201d You could also translate that \u201cThe guy is an idiot, yes, but he\u2019s good\u201d or \u201cThe guy&nbsp;is&nbsp;an idiot, but he\u2019s good.\u201d Never translate it \u201cindeed\u201d since it doesn\u2019t mean that in the English of 2016.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>aliqua exempla collegi<\/p>\n<p>meus vir hic quidem est. \u201cThis <em>is<\/em> my husband\u201d (Plaut. <em>Amph<\/em>. 660)<\/p>\n<p>me quidem praesente numquam factum est, quod sciam. \u201cThis never happened in <em>my<\/em> presence, as far as I know.\u201d (Plaut. <em>Amph<\/em>. 749)<\/p>\n<p>facile id quidem edepol possum, si tu vis. \u201cI can easily do <em>that<\/em>, if you want.\u201d (Plaut. <em>Cist<\/em>. 234)<\/p>\n<p>ne id quidem tam breve spatium potest opitulari. \u201cNot even <em>that<\/em> brief amount of time can help.\u201d (Cornelia, mater Gracchorum, epistula, fragmenta 2.8)<\/p>\n<p>nimis stulte faciunt, mea quidem sententia. \u201cThey behave very stupidly, in my opinion.\u201d (Plaut. <em>Men<\/em>. 81)<\/p>\n<p>adeo veritatis diligens, ut ne ioco quidem mentiretur. \u201cSo careful about the truth that he did not lie even for a joke.\u201d (Nepos <em>Epam<\/em>. 3)<\/p>\n<p>utinam quidem istuc evenisset! Sed non accidit. \u201cIf only it had turned out that way!
