for &#8220;Medieval Latin (Summer 2013): The Gesta Francorum.\u00a0 To do this:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>1.Create a Google account if you don&#8217;t already have one.<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>2.Create a Google Plus account (just Google &#8220;Google Plus&#8221;, or click on the Plus sign on your Google page.<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>3.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Go to &#8220;Communities&#8221; (in the left-hand column of your Google Plus home page) and search for &#8220;Medieval Latin, Summer 2013&#8221;<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>4.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Send a request to join the community from within Google Plus.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>If that doesn&#8217;t work please send and email to wturpin1@swarthmore.edu.\u00a0 For assignments, texts, supporting material, refer to the original website; the link is in the original posting above.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Many thanks to Chris Francese for posting these announcements.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\" align=\"center\">\n<p style=\"text-align: left\" align=\"center\"><strong>Update from Prof. Turpin May 9, 2013 on recordings and how to register:\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>It turns out that using Google hangouts in any kind of large-scale way means that the sessions get stored on Youtube automatically, unless we go in and delete them, which we presumably won&#8217;t.\u00a0 So I think we&#8217;re going to try to adjust to this brave new world and deal with that fact.<\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s no actual registration, in any formal sense; just keep an eye on <a href=\"https:\/\/sites.google.com\/a\/swarthmore.edu\/medieval-latin-summer-2013-the-gesta-francorum\/\">the website<\/a> for a signup for people willing to come online and translate and be in the discussion.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\" align=\"center\">In the summer of 2013 Professors <a href=\"http:\/\/www.swarthmore.edu\/academics\/classics\/faculty-and-staff\/william-turpin.xml\">William Turpin<\/a> (Swarthmore College, Classics) and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.history.pitt.edu\/faculty\/venarde.php\">Bruce Venarde<\/a> (University of Pittsburgh, History) will be offering a <b><i>free<\/i><\/b> online Latin translation course, meeting on Google Hangout.\u00a0 The class will meet once a week starting on\u00a0 Monday, June 3, at 8-10 p.m. EST and will continue for perhaps ten weeks.\u00a0 We will be translating and discussing the <i><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Gesta_Francorum\">Gesta Francoru<\/a>m<\/i>, an anonymous first-hand account of the First Crusade written in relatively straightforward medieval Latin.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 380px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/www.swarthmore.edu\/Images\/academics\/classics\/profile_william_turpin.jpg\" width=\"370\" height=\"279\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">William Turpin, Swarthmore College<\/p><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\" align=\"center\">The course is intended for students who have completed a year or so of classical Latin at the college level, or the equivalent in high school.\u00a0 It should also be suitable for those whose Latin may be a little rusty, or for those new to medieval Latin.\u00a0 Google Hangout will allow eight active participants (i.e. people who may wish to translate a particular section of text) and an unlimited number of auditors (who will be able to submit questions and comments by email).<\/p>\n<p>All are welcome, as active participants or as auditors.\u00a0 For more information, including a text of the <em>Gesta Francorum<\/em> edited for student use, go to:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/sites.google.com\/a\/swarthmore.edu\/medieval-latin-summer-2013-the-gesta-francorum\/\">https:\/\/sites.google.com\/a\/swarthmore.edu\/medieval-latin-summer-2013-the-gesta-francorum\/<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Update May 23, 2013: How to Register: Prof. Turpin writes: We make progress!\u00a0 Anyone interested in participating (or &#8220;auditing&#8221;) should join the Google Plus &#8220;Community&#8221;
