{"id":186,"date":"2010-08-27T12:07:45","date_gmt":"2010-08-27T17:07:45","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/edtech\/?p=186"},"modified":"2011-02-12T14:04:41","modified_gmt":"2011-02-12T19:04:41","slug":"faculty-willoughby-workshop","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/edtech\/2010\/08\/27\/faculty-willoughby-workshop\/","title":{"rendered":"Faculty Willoughby Workshop"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;m a little late, but I wanted to mention a few of Willoughby faculty workshops we had last week. \u00a0For those not familiar with Dickinson College&#8217;s Willoughby program, basically it&#8217;s a intensive week of workshops for faculty on Web 2.0 and emerging technologies that we think could be valuable for their teaching or research. \u00a0Anyone who would like to see all the notes for all of the workshops can view them <a href=\"https:\/\/docs3.google.com\/document\/edit?id=1LnMxnJZBHCsCbve4T7BTowxpS6J-ajLJk88ztev6A64&amp;hl=en#\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>We had three new sessions this year that I thought went very well and deserve a mention. \u00a0Andy Petrus and Mark Wardecker did a \u00a0presentation on <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/Doc?docid=0AXFWVQsiLr6jZGR6azl4a3NfODJkd2QyNzhncQ&amp;hl=en\">visualizations<\/a> using primarily\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/manyeyes.alphaworks.ibm.com\/manyeyes\/\">Many Eyes<\/a>. \u00a0The faculty took to it very quickly. \u00a0The text visualizations were especially popular. \u00a0Part of this I think was due to the fact that we had a larger number of faculty from the humanities this year, but also because there&#8217;s no need to reformat the data in Excel.<\/p>\n<p>I did a presentation with Mark Wardecker on <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/Doc?docid=0AceK2cPi8K7fZGd0a2I4bXRfNWdzNTZyNWZt&amp;hl=en\">open content<\/a>, with an emphasis on educational resources, open government, and crowdsourcing. \u00a0Last year, the most popular part was crowdsourcing as the faculty discussed possible projects for their students. \u00a0This year, there was a heavier focus on the resources portion. \u00a0Faculty compared the courses from MIT with large intro courses as Dickinson. \u00a0They were very similar, which meant they could save themselves a lot of time by either using the resources from the course or as just a template.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, I did presentation with Ryan Burke on <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/document\/pub?id=11oujOJaPjqYQJoTa_Q6aRv4hAs3waSVNBXRqDouuAs4\">augmented reality<\/a>. \u00a0The very cutting edge stuff is always a hard sell, but we had quite a few practical academic examples from <a href=\"http:\/\/manyeyes.alphaworks.ibm.com\/manyeyes\/\">Bryan Alexander&#8217;s slideshare<\/a>. \u00a0The professors in community studies or with classes that had a local component in particular were able to discuss projects where students could add &#8220;layars&#8221; of information to places in Carlisle.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;m a little late, but I wanted to mention a few of Willoughby faculty workshops we had last week. \u00a0For those not familiar with Dickinson College&#8217;s Willoughby program, basically it&#8217;s a intensive week of workshops for faculty on Web 2.0 &hellip; <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/edtech\/2010\/08\/27\/faculty-willoughby-workshop\/\">Continue reading<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":776,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[3],"tags":[8150,8148,8149,6791,8151],"class_list":["post-186","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-general","tag-augmented-reality","tag-open-content","tag-visualization","tag-willoughby","tag-workshop"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/edtech\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/186","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/edtech\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/edtech\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/edtech\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/776"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/edtech\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=186"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/edtech\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/186\/revisions"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/edtech\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=186"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/edtech\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=186"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/edtech\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=186"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
