{"id":146,"date":"2020-06-15T17:01:58","date_gmt":"2020-06-15T17:01:58","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/edwarmar\/?p=146"},"modified":"2020-06-15T17:02:54","modified_gmt":"2020-06-15T17:02:54","slug":"1888-1908-the-first-theater","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/edwarmar\/2020\/06\/15\/1888-1908-the-first-theater\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8220;1888-1908&#8221;- The First Theater"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: left\">\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 Thomas Edison created a film projector called the vitascope and sold them to many vaudeville theaters as an act.<a href=\"#_ftn1\" name=\"_ftnref1\">[1]<\/a> For example, the vitascope played at the Keith\u2019s Bijou Theatre in Philadelphia.<a href=\"#_ftn2\" name=\"_ftnref2\">[2]<\/a> However, many times, theaters were not able to use the vitascope due to electrical problems.<a href=\"#_ftn3\" name=\"_ftnref3\">[3]<\/a> Across the Atlantic, two French technicians, Auguste and Louis Lumiere were also selling a projector\/camera called the cin\u00e9matographe.<a href=\"#_ftn4\" name=\"_ftnref4\">[4]<\/a> The cin\u00e9matographe was hand-cranked, so it did not have the same electric problem as the vitascope.<a href=\"#_ftn5\" name=\"_ftnref5\">[5]<\/a> As mentioned, Edison sold his vitascope to Keith\u2019s Bijou Theater. The answer, like any answer regarding film history, is complicated. Edison opened his own store in New Orleans named Vitascope Hall on July 26, 1896.<a href=\"#_ftn7\" name=\"_ftnref7\">[7]<\/a> However, Guinness considered The State Theatre in Washington, Iowa to be the first theater. <a href=\"#_ftn8\" name=\"_ftnref8\">[8]<\/a> The problem with The State Theatre is that it was originally an opera house before it started to show films. So what do historians considered to be the first theater? While the Vitascope Hall was the first-place dedicated to showing films, Tally\u2019 Electric Theatre was the first prominent, modern example of a movie theater as the building itself was constructed for the sole purpose of showing films.<a href=\"#_ftn9\" name=\"_ftnref9\">[9]<\/a> Vitascope Hall, on the other hand, occupied a storefront that Edison bought.<a href=\"#_ftn10\" name=\"_ftnref10\">[10]<\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 Tally\u2019s Electric Theater opened in 1902 and according to advertisement promoting its opening, the first movies shown were <em>Capture of the Biddle Brothers <\/em>and <em>New York City in a Blizzard<\/em>. These films were shot by Edwin S. Porter, who frequently worked for Edison. Porter\u2019s works as a director greatly influenced the rise of theaters. A year later, Porter released <em>The Great Train Robbery<\/em>.<a href=\"#_ftn11\" name=\"_ftnref11\">[11]<\/a> \u00a0It was one of the first films that pioneered new techniques including the use of non-linear editing, framing, multi-cameras, and on-location sets. The success of this film caused a huge explosion in the rise of theaters, which were called Nickelodeon.
