Dickinson 2012 alum, Laura Stone, is a graduate student at the University of South Alabama in Dr. Sean Powers lab at the Dauphin Island Sea Lab in marine Sciences. Prior to graduate school she received an internship in this lab that helped her exceed in the program today. The lab is currently taking applications for a similar internship and would like to make students at Dickinson aware of this opportunity.

The Fisheries Ecology lab is seeking interns to work at the Dauphin Island Sea Lab (DISL) on a wide variety of projects in waters adjacent to Dauphin Island, a gulf barrier island in the northern Gulf of Mexico fringing the Mobile Bay estuary. Internships are available for two 6 month periods: for recent graduates April – Oct, 2015 and for spring graduates June-December 2015.
Internships in the Fisheries Ecology Lab under Dr. Sean Powers involve hands-on participation in ongoing research. Qualified applicants will have the opportunity to assist with groundbreaking studies in Fisheries Ecology in the northern Gulf of Mexico that involve a variety of fish (bony fishes, sharks and rays) and shellfish from both offshore and inshore locales. In this process interns will gain experience with various sampling techniques used in fisheries research, as well as the associated analyses of data.
Potential candidates will work closely with a variety of lab personnel, including principal investigators, current graduate students and lab technicians. In addition DISL hosts visiting scientists through weekly seminars which interns will have the opportunity to participate in during their stay. Preference will be given to applicants considering marine science and/or fisheries as a career. REQUIREMENTS:
Interns will be required to participate heavily in field-based activities, which are sometimes characterized by long hours and potentially arduous conditions. Much of the research conducted at the lab is by boat, thus experience with marine vessels is helpful though not a requirement. In addition, there will be laboratory processing of samples during poor weather conditions as well as after some field collections. Overall, the lab is looking for committed and dependable individuals that are highly motivated to participate in our diverse research program.
Stipend:
$645/2week pay period
