This post comes from Dickinson alum Christine Burns ’14.  She worked at the Rachel Carson National Wildlife Refuge last summer and says, “It was an awesome internship and I definitely recommend it to anyone looking for a fun summer. You get free housing and a living stipend and you can also do the internship for credit.  There are three positions open, Plover, Botany, and Salt marsh. I was the Salt Marsh intern, but I know about all of the other positions because we all worked together so if anyone is interested in has questions you can tell them to shoot me an email (cjburns530@gmail.com).

Deadline for internship applications is Friday, February 20, 2015.

Interns work with refuge staff on resource management operations and outreach. Duties include shorebird nest monitoring, conducting wildlife surveys, invasive plant control and mapping, propagating native plants, fish sampling, developing and delivering outreach programs, and assisting visitors in our contact station.

  • Must be able to work individually and under varied climatic conditions, including hot and insect infested environments
  • Must possess valid drivers’ license. Weekend and holiday work mandatory.

Rachel Carson National Wildlife Refuge protects more than 5,600 acres of predominately salt marsh in southern, coastal Maine. Refuge lands are rich in diverse habitats and wildlife. Public uses include hunting, fishing, wildlife observation, photography, environmental education, and interpretation.

Twelve-week internship begins mid-May through mid-August – 40 hours per week. Start and end dates are flexible.

College credit available. Arrange details with your university/college and state your intention in application.

Salary/Housing – A living allowance may be provided. Communal, government housing available or intern may provide own housing within commuting distance of Wells, Maine.
