Community Bike & Pedestrian Planning Intern Position

Position Summary: The Bike & Pedestrian Planning Intern will work as part of the Susquehanna Greenway Partnership River Town technical assistance program. Responsibilities will include:

  • Assist with community bike and pedestrian planning.
  • Assimilating existing Bike/Pedestrian GIS data and mapping.
  • Working with PennDOT Bike/Ped Coordinators to review best practices and guidance documents for conducting Bike/Ped Audits from the Federal Highway Administration, Safe Routes to School, Alliance for Walking and Biking, etc.
  • Develop methodology for assessing existing community level sidewalk and bicycle facilities from available Ortho and GIS data, using Walk Lehigh Valley as a model.
  • Assist with community Bike/Ped audits

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Working toward a Bachelor’s degree in community development, community or environmental planning, landscape architecture, environmental studies, recreation management, or related field.
  • Some experience with community planning and/or civic engagement preferred
  • Strong computer literacy is essential:  MS Office; and some familiarity with website content management; experience with GIS, Adobe Illustrator or InDesign a plus
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and work independently
  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills
  • Excellent interpersonal skills required
  • At least 21 years of age, be a citizen, national, or lawful permanent resident alien of the United States
  • Valid driver’s license

Position Summary: The River Towns Program Assistant will work as part of the Susquehanna Greenway Partnership River Town technical assistance program. Responsibilities will include community planning and civic engagement of volunteers to assist with park, trail and green infrastructure projects. Additional duties will include planning and conducting educational workshops and events related to the Susquehanna Greenway.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in community development, community or environmental planning, landscape architecture, environmental studies, recreation management, resource management, or related field.
  • Experience with community planning and/or civic engagement preferred
  • Strong computer literacy is essential:  MS Office; and some familiarity with website content management; experience with GIS, Adobe Illustrator or InDesign a plus
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and work independently
  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills
  • Some supervisory experience preferred, excellent interpersonal skills required
  • At least 21 years of age, be a citizen, national, or lawful permanent resident alien of the United States
  • Valid driver’s license
  • Must be capable of lifting 40 pounds and physical labor.

 Essential functions of the Position:

Community Planning and Civic Engagement

  • Help with community public input meetings and visioning projects.
  • Assist local leaders to develop community network analysis.
  • Maintain constituent database of community contacts.
  • Provide content updates river towns section of Susquehanna Greenway website.
  • Work with community volunteers on outreach and publicity for their projects and events.
  • Help to organize and train community revitalization teams focused on improving parks, river accesses, walking and biking trails, and sustainable economic development.
  • Assist with community assessments and developing community greenway plans.
  • Create community profiles.
  • Work with key local partners to identify the priority environmental clean-up, restoration or green infrastructure projects.
  • Help to develop strategies and grants to support community projects.
  • Develop appropriate training materials for volunteers and advocates.
  • Recruit and train volunteers, coordinate work days, track volunteer accomplishments.
  • Participation in AmeriCorps Group Activities (Required)
  • Members may not participate in any activities included in the Prohibited Activities as listed in the ‘Partner Site and Member Agreements’ (Required)

Proposed Weekly Schedule:   Monday-Friday 8:30-4:00, some evenings and weekends.

  • The responsibilities of this position include working with children, youth, elderly and disabled people, which requires that Members must have all clearances before serving.

2017 Outreach & Events Intern

The Susquehanna Greenway Partnership (SGP) seeks an energetic and creative team player to join our Outreach and Communications Team. The intern will work closely with the Outreach & Volunteer Coordinator, assisting her with online content management, event planning, and community outreach to raise awareness and inspire action for regional Susquehanna Greenway initiatives and events. This is a great opportunity to support the inner workings of a dynamic nonprofit and expand multiple professional competencies.

Location: Lewisburg, PA

Dates of Internship: June 5th – August 11, 2017,

Compensation: Unpaid, available for course credit

Work Schedule: Flexible work week Mon – Fri. Interns are expected to work up to 25 hours per week, some of which may be completed away from the office. Some weekend events may be required.

 Internship Summary & Responsibilities

The Communications Intern will help drive SGP’s brand and message strategy through all channels. Key responsibilities include:

  • Outreach: Work with Outreach & Volunteer Coordinator to assist in and implement outreach strategies that engage community groups and individuals of the Susquehanna Greenway. Represent the Susquehanna Greenway at select community events.
  • Event Management: Assist the Outreach and Volunteer Coordinator with planning and organizing community events including the Susquehanna Sojourn, Photo Contest, and traveling gallery.
  • Image Inventory: Enhance our online photography catalog by organizing and uploading high quality images to a cloud-based platform.
  • Communications: Assist with media releases. Help ensure SGP events and partner events are included in online events calendar and in appropriate area publications.
  • Administrative: Maintain a filing system for communications materials, update and enhance membership database, research and organize publications, track key performance metrics, and assist with other administrative duties.

Qualifications – Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Pursuing a bachelor’s degree in communications, public relations, marketing, or related major
  • Excellent written and oral communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks, take initiative, deliver high quality work, and work independently
  • At least 18 years of age, be a citizen, national, or lawful permanent resident alien of the United States
  • Experience with photography, videography, social media campaigns, website programming, and/or graphic design a plus.
