We seek two graduate students in freshwater science to join the NSF-funded Systems Approaches to Understanding & Navigating the New Arctic (SAUNNA) NRT program at UMaine. Both positions would focus on interdisciplinary research in South Greenland. Students would earn a degree through the interdisciplinary Ecology & Environmental Science program at UMaine. Both students would be co-mentored by Dr. Jasmine Sarosand Dr. Kiley Daley.

1. MS student: This student would conduct a project contributing to the understanding of freshwater use among sheep farming communities in South Greenland within a changing climate. The student would combine water resource management methods, such as mapping and scenario modeling, with local and Indigenous knowledge to identify areas of concern for sheep farmers and address related research questions. We are seeking a student with a bachelor’s degree in environmental studies, geography (including some human geography courses), ecology, environmental sciences, or a related field with a strong interest in interdisciplinary work. Working closely and developing partnerships with local sheep farmers will be an important aspect of this project. As such, professional experience (volunteer or employment) working in a community engagement role is considered a strong asset. Kiley Daley (kiley.daley@maine.edu) would serve at the primary advisor for this student.

2. Ph.D. student: This student would conduct an interdisciplinary project to decipher patterns in and drivers of lake ice phenology and thermal structure in South Greenland. The student would integrate paleolimnology, lake ecology, remote sensing, and Indigenous & local knowledge to address research questions. We are seeking a student primarily focused on limnology for this project, with a strong and demonstrated interest in interdisciplinary work. A Master’s degree and/or additional experience beyond the B.S. degree preferred. Jasmine Saros (jasmine.saros@maine.edu) would serve as the primary advisor for this student.

Students in this program will receive an annual stipend plus tuition, fees, and health insurance coverage. Students must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents to receive NRT support. Prospective students should contact the primary advisor indicated for more information and to learn about the application process. For full consideration, please contact us prior to December 15, 2022.
