Position Summary: Dickinson students are invited to apply for three Research Assistant positions to help assess climate change resilience at Dickinson College in spring 2024. The Research Assistants will work as a team for 6 to 8 hours per week each for 12 weeks during the semester and will be paid $10.00 per hour. The research team will be supervised by Dr. Neil Leary, director of Dickinson College’s Center for Sustainability Education.
Details: The spring 2024 research is part of a 3-year project, Building Climate Resilience at Dickinson and in Central Pennsylvania. This fall, students are assessing climate change risks and resilience in Cumberland County and in Carlisle. In the spring, a new team of students will assess climate change risks and resilience of Dickinson College. Issues to be addressed include, for example, risks to students, faculty, staff, buildings, grounds, and other infrastructure from storms, extreme rainfall, extreme heat events, drought, degraded air quality, and other effects of climate change; disruption of electricity, natural gas, water, and other services due to weather events; and potential impacts of climate change on Dickinson’s endowment. The findings of the fall and spring climate resilience assessments will be used as input for the next phase of the project – investigation of strategies for adapting to climate change and building climate resilience at Dickinson, in Carlisle, and in Cumberland County.
Dickinson sophomores, juniors, and seniors are eligible to apply. Students from all majors are encouraged to apply.
Qualifications: strongly motivated, dependable students who are highly organized, able to work independently and as part of a team, able to conduct research and synthesize information from a variety of sources, have strong writing skills, and are highly motivated to learn about climate change risks and resilience. Prior familiarity with climate change risks and resilience from course work and other experiences and/or experience conducting, analyzing, and synthesizing interviews are desired but not required.
