Overview:
The Miami University Research Experience for Undergrads (REU) program in Ecology and Environment is a summer research program supported by the National Science Foundation (NSF). Our program is an exciting opportunity for 9-12 undergraduate students to actively engage in a 10 week collaborative research project.

  • Each student focuses on an independent research project.
  • Research opportunities are available in the lab or field (aquatic or terrestrial environments).
  • Small groups of students and mentors form clusters that meet regularly to discuss current literature related to their projects.
  • The summer includes field trips, short courses on ethics and professions in ecology and environmental science, and seminars by guest speakers.
  • Participants interact with students from diverse backgrounds and make connections with faculty and graduate students as they learn about Ecology and Environmental Science as a career.

About the Program:
The REU program is hosted by Miami University in Oxford, which is located in southwest Ohio 35 miles north of Cincinnati and 45 miles south of Dayton. It is a beautiful town that hosts a variety of community events and provides ample opportunity for outdoor activities at the Miami University Natural Areas and the nearby Hueston Woods State Park.

  • Stipend: Each student receives a $6000 split into payments over their summer stay. Additionally, students will be able to purchase necessary research supplies with a designated stipend.
  • Transportation: Travel to and from Miami University is paid for by our program. Students are picked up in multiple groups from the Cincinnati Airport (CVG) by the program assistant. Students may also drive to Miami University if they want a car during their stay.
  • Housing: Housing is also paid for by the program. Students will be housed in a Miami University dormitory that includes air conditioning, a kitchen, on-site laundry services, study areas, and a recreation room.
  • Credits: If students are interested in receiving credit via their home institution, they should initiate the process prior to their arrival. For more information contact our program codirector Dr. Dave Berg (bergdj@miamioh.edu).
  • Field Trips and Activities: Students will participate in a variety of field trips and activities over the course of their stay at Miami University. This includes a camping trip at the beginning of the summer, as well as service learning trips that are focused on conservation and environmental science. In addition, two guests speakers will present seminars, work with the REU students in the field, and discuss their research with the clusters.
