Applicants must have a Bachelors or Master’s degree in Geography (or related social science/humanities disciplines) and have broad interests in political ecology and/or resource geography. Experience with historical archival research is desired. Any background in chemistry (or chemical engineering) and/or the interaction between chemistry and thermodynamics would also be of interest. The Graduate Research Assistant would contribute to a two year NSF funded project which examines the relationship between energy consumption, climate change, and the nitrogen fertilizer industry. The project applies a political ecology approach – with an emphasis on power relations, historical context, and cultural discourses – to the “industrial metabolism” of synthetic nitrogen production. The project involves archival research, field site visits, and interviews. The research assistant’s responsibilities would include: locating archival collections of interest, transcribing field interviews, reviewing and organizing relevant secondary source materials (e.g. government documents and industry journals), and collecting relevant news and other media sources. The Research Assistantship provides funding, including a 12 month stipend, 24 credit hours of tuition, and benefits, for a student working toward a MA or PhD degree in the Department of Geography at Syracuse University. The Assistantship requires 20 hours of work per week while the rest of the time can be devoted to graduate classes and the candidate’s own research.
