The Department of Geography at Syracuse Universityseeks applications for a Graduate Research Assistant to fund study toward a MA or PhD in Geography. Applicants must have a Bachelors or Master’s degree in Geography (or related social science/humanities disciplines) and have broad interests in political ecology and/or resource geography. Experience with historical archival research is desired. Any background in chemistry (or chemical engineering) and/or the interaction between chemistry and thermodynamics would also be of interest. The Graduate Research Assistant would contribute to a two year NSF funded project which examines the relationship between energy consumption, climate change, and the nitrogen fertilizer industry. The project applies a political ecology approach – with an emphasis on power relations, historical context, and cultural discourses – to the “industrial metabolism” of synthetic nitrogen production. The project involves archival research, field site visits, and interviews.
