Spring Break Energy Justice Shale Convergence

Comments Off on Spring Break Energy Justice Shale Convergence

Are you ready for some momentum building in Pennsylvania after New York’s historic ban on hydraulic fracturing? If so, check out our spring event Energy Justice Shale Convergence, happening March 13-16th.

What is It? The goal of the Convergence is to strengthen organizing efforts, connect with local campaigns and projects, and build relationships across our movement to stop shale gas extraction and infrastructure.  Participants will learn about the long history of resistance in northeast Pennsylvania, gain valuable organizing skills, participate in community service, see shale gas extraction and infrastructure first hand, and hear from impacted residents in the shalefields. Those interested can remain in the area for more in depth training and volunteer with our current campaigns.

Who Should Attend? Students, impacted landowners, environmental and social justice organizations, scientists, and surrounding community members who want to learn more about shale gas extraction and gain hands on organizing skills.

What Skills and Workshops Will Be Offered? Campaign organizing, media (social and mainstream), know your rights training, how to plan an effective action, facilitation, anti- oppression, and much more.

We are still working on content, if you have skills to share or specific trainings you would like to see, let us know! Submit your workshop proposals to Join-EJSI@googlegroups.com (please include contact info, workshop title, description, name of organization, length, and any technology you need).

Where Is It? The Endless Mountains Region of Northeast Pennsylvania in Susquehanna County (the most densely drilled area in the state).

Lodging: Accommodations are made at a local camp and include indoor heated space with mattresses, beds, and outdoor tent platforms. Other sleeping arrangements may be available upon request.

Register Today: Registration can be found here. We will not turn anyone away for lack of funds! It will cost us about $15 per person, per day for meals, materials, and lodging. We are asking for a sliding-scale registration fee of between $15 and $100, based on what you can afford. If you can pay more, you cover the cost of someone who can’t. Once registered, we will send you event details and directions to the camp.

Who Are We? Energy Justice Shale Initiative (EJSI) is a project of Energy Justice Network, a grassroots organization dedicated to advancing environmental justice. EJSI is a permanent organizing hub in the shalefields of northeast PA, empowering young climate and extraction activists to work directly with residents impacted by fracking. We campaign against specific, and strategic gas infrastructure projects, convene organizing trainings for students and community leaders, and share the stories of impacted residents through creative media.
