Rez Refuge Ministries Intern – Garden Program

The Garden Intern works with the Recreation Specialist to manage the vegetable garden, and perform daily garden duties such as watering, weeding, composting, harvesting, cleaning, and the like. The Garden Intern is responsible for engaging children, teenagers, and adults into the activities of keeping the garden. The Garden Intern is also responsible for networking in the community, recruiting neighbors for tree-planting initiatives, composting initiatives, and backyard garden startups.

Essential duties and responsibilities:

 Gardener

  • Follow the garden and landscaping plan to execute daily gardening tasks.
  • Plants, maintains, and harvests the community garden.

Recruiter, Organizer, and Educator

  • Recruits neighbors and youth for participation in gardening and garden related projects.
  • Prepares and demonstrates gardening skills and activities for youth.
  • Offers education sessions for youth and adults on gardening projects, opportunities, and skills.
  • Organizes residents in an effort to build viable garden projects in the neighborhood.

Communicator

  • Works with the Recreation Specialist to implement gardening activities into the Youth Programs.
  • Works with the Recreation Specialist to offer quality gardening education and programs to Rez Refuge constituents.
  • Produces monthly written reports on work, essential projects, learning and growth, self-evaluation, and work and program goals.

Hours: 40/week

Compensation: Free housing includes kitchen and wifi. Possible stipend TBD.

Dates: June 1 – August 7, 2015 (flexible)

Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma and some College education preferred.
  • One (1) or more years demonstrated experience in vegetable gardening, landscaping.
  • One (1) or more years demonstrated experience working with children, youth, young adults, and adults.
  • Familiarity with various organic and sustainable vegetable gardening methods.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to work with many individuals and manage work relationships with constituents and community partners.
