THE CHESAPEAKE BAY FOUNDATION

The Chesapeake Bay Foundation (CBF) is the largest regional non-profit conservation organization working solely to save the Bay. Established in 1967, CBF has a staff of approximately 185 employees working in offices in Annapolis Maryland; Richmond and VA Beach, Virginia; Harrisburg, Pennsylvania; and Washington, D.C., and in 15 field education program locations. Our staff and volunteer corps work throughout the region educating students and adults, advocating for clean water polices, restoring waterways, and litigating when necessary.

CBF’s headquarters office in Annapolis, MD is the Philip Merrill Environmental Center, the world’s first U.S. Green Build Council’s LEED platinum building. In 2014, CBF opened The Brock Environmental Center in Virginia Beach, VA. The Brock Center is one of the most energy efficient, environmentally smart buildings in the world.

CBF has an annual budget of approximately $21 million and is supported by more than 200,000 members and e-subscribers. For more information on CBF please visit www.cbf.org.

CONTEXT OF THE POSITION
The Agricultural Economist Intern will work with scientists, planners, lawyers, grassroots, and communications staff as part of CBF’s Environmental Protection and Restoration Program. This position will contribute to the efforts of the Pennsylvania State Office in restoring and protecting clean water in the Commonwealth through assessing the economic impacts of agricultural conservation practices. Many conservation practices that improve water quality, such as no-till cultivation, cover crops, riparian buffers, and rotational grazing, also provide other benefits to the overall farm management. The intern will compile and analyze research on impacts of conservation practices on farms’ net profitability, considering factors such as labor needs, fuel consumption, nutrient purchases, herd health, and crop loss risks, for a variety of crop and livestock farms.

The agricultural economist intern may be expected to travel within the watershed and to attend at least one of CBF’s educational field trips (canoeing, work boat, skipjack, etc.) for a direct experience with the natural resources CBF strives to protect.
Essential functions include:
• Work with staff to conduct economic analysis on impacts of conservation practices and ancillary benefits
• Assist in preparation of outreach materials and presentations
• Communicate the importance of conservation practices and clean water

Qualifications: CBF is looking for interns with excellent analytical, communication, and writing skills. Preferred candidates will have completed sophomore year of college, knowledge of agricultural conservation practices, and taken coursework related to economics, natural resources, and/or environmental sciences. Candidates should possess the ability to work collaboratively and independently. Personal transportation is required.
