The Student Conservation Association is looking for interested candidates to participate in great internship opportunities throughout the D.C. area. Bike Trail Ambassador

Position Description:
Interns will work within a small team to support the Bike Trail Ambassador program at the George Washington Memorial Parkway.  Work will include public outreach activities out on the Mount Vernon Trail and in the local community; conduct trail patrol activities; quickly and accurately report trail conditions; and engage the public around use and safety and bicycle/walker etiquette.  A main objective will be to increase the use of the trails by multiple groups, which will involve some research and communication efforts in the local community.  Ambassadors will sponsor trailside outreach activities with educational themes utilizing a mobile ‘Ranger Mount Vernon Trail Visitor Center’.  Ambassadors will also organize high profile volunteer trail clean up days with public participants along the trail and adjacent lands.

Horticultural/Natural Resources Internship – Local Only

Position Description:
The Horticulture Intern works with plants and people, in the greenhouse and outdoors. The position involves general plant maintenance including potting, pruning, propagating, planting, watering, weeding, soil preparation, fertilizing, staking and mulching.  The intern will have the opportunity to work cooperatively with volunteers and be trained to educate students in plant care, gardening and conservation practices.  Additional work will include working in the landscape on grounds maintenance and removal of exotic invasive plants.
Work is generally weekdays, however an occasional weekend may be required.  The ideal candidate will be interested in learning a variety of skills and working independently.
The George Washington Memorial Parkway is located in northern Virginia, adjacent to Washington, DC. The park’s greenhouse facility is located at Daingerfield Island. The Horticulture nursery program is principally responsible for the production of high-quality American elm trees for planting in and around the National Mall and Monuments.

Archives and Museum Technician Internship – Local Only

Position Description:
Assists the George Washington Memorial Parkway Museum Curator with the preparation of materials related to the transcription effort being undertaken in 2015 for the Fort Hunt Oral History (FOHU) project. In the summer of 2015, the primary duties will be focused on assisting with the administrative tasks related to the transcription project for the interviews.  Duties include assisting the curator and Chief of Resource Management in coordinating the collection of the oral history media and information within the FOHU collection, track the completion of the transcriptions, and review/process the completed transcripts as well as assist with coordinating the reviews of processed transcriptions by others. Processing will include matching existing consent forms with individual oral histories and preparing transcription documents for submission to surviving interviewees/families for review. Assisting with the gathering of consent forms if not previously secured or seeking consent f
or public use from interviewees/ families where possible.

The applicant may also work with park and regional staff, as well as the Friends’ group, to develop public interpretation using available oral history information and materials as appropriate.  Work may also include research efforts in locating additional veterans or information pertaining to PO Box 1142 and FOHU; additional processing of collection of materials and records related to the FOHU project including scanning/digitizing of documents for public use may be undertaken. Additional museum related work is possible as assigned.

Applicants should be well organized and possess skills in documentary research.  Background in cultural anthropology, history, or archives management is desired.  Work will occur primarily in library or office settings, however some outdoor fieldwork may be required.  Located at the George Washington Memorial Parkway, just outside of Washington, DC, in McLean,Virginia.

Cultural Resources Intern – Local Only

Position Description:
he Cultural Resources Intern for the George Washington Memorial Parkway (GWMP) of the National Park Service (NPS) would be able to engage in a number of cultural resource program area activities in addition to having an opportunity to work on a specifically defined project or projects, as this will provide the broadest experience in the wide range of activities undertaken by a park Cultural Resources Management (CRM) Program.  Projects will include assisting with archeological investigations, conducting historical research, working with archival and library records and materials, working with CRM files, helping with the curation of museum collections, performing architectural conservation work on historic structures, and assisting with cultural landscape management tasks.  One specific project possibility would involve helping with the organization and curation of records, interviews, and photos associated with the P.O. Box 1142 Oral History and Research project, which seek
s to record the secret history of a highly classified WWII intelligence installation located within Fort Hunt Park, a unit of GWMP  Depending on the work schedule, the individual selected would have the opportunity to work with the park Historic Architect, Landscape Architect, and Museum Curator, and the Region’s Architectural Conservator.

Work experiences would include having the selectee learn introductory archeological skills and concepts while assisting with projects that require archeological field and lab work.  The intern will assist with research such as reviewing planting plans, vista and viewshed plans, landscape documents, and other similar materials to assess the current conditions of GWMP cultural landscapes and work with landscape architects to improve conditions.  The selected individual would help with the continued organization, management, cataloging, and filing of records and materials to assure that all GWMP cultural resource management records, archives, and library resource files and materials are appropriately accounted for under NPS Guidelines.  Opportunities will exist for reviewing archived drawings and plans and historic maps to help identify potential historic resources and ascertain current proposed project impacts on these resources.  The intern will assist with other CRM tasks
and projects that can include helping to manage museum and archival collections (organization, filing, researching, handling interviews) for projects such as the Fort Hunt Oral History and Research; and assist with other museum curatorial work following NPS Standards (cataloging, preparing for storage, etc. of museum objects).  Opportunities will occur to attend project meetings and perform work to help with rehabilitation of historic structures, monuments, and memorials, working with the architectural conservator and historical architect.

Position description: This program is designed to provide the student with work experience directly related to their academic field of study and to orient and expose the student to the mission and work of the National Park Service.  The Intern provides support to the Lands, Planning and Design Division of George Washington Memorial Parkway.  Professionals within this group include engineers, landscape architects, historical architects, GIS specialists, Planners and Realty specialists.
Major Duties
This intern position performs duties directed toward gaining Park engineering experience that complements academic studies.

Field Work
Assist with inspection of utility sites and construction within Park boundaries.  This may include survey, flagging and documenting site actitivies
Create field reports including narratives, photodocumentation and action items, for site inspections of Park infrastructure and assets including, but not limited to roadways, bridges, buildings, trails, signage, memorials, trail counters, etc. Participate in internal scoping activities initiating projects.
Collect data to georeference sign locations.

Office Work
Assist in the development of plans, designs and cost estimates
Update the wayfinding inventory and conversion from GIS shapefiles to google earth kmz files.
Scan files and plan sets for archiving and storage.
Obtain an understanding of environmental compliance procedures and review

Intern will be required to work onsite, reporting to GWMP Headquarters, McLean, VA and GWMP Maintenance Building, Arlington VA.

Desired skills: Practical knowledge of CAD. Candidates who are pursuing a degree in civil engineering, landscape architecture, or architecture are preferred.
