The lab is currently taking applications for a similar internship \u00a0and would like to make students at Dickinson aware of this opportunity.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>POSITION:\u00a0 Fisheries Ecology Lab &#8211; 2015 Internship<br \/>\n<\/strong><strong>CATEGORY:\u00a0 University Programs<br \/>\n<\/strong><strong>POSTED ON:\u00a0 December 15th, 2014<br \/>\n<\/strong><strong>APPLICATION DEADLINE:\u00a0 February 13th, 2015<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Description:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Fisheries Ecology lab is seeking\u00a0interns to work at the Dauphin Island Sea Lab (DISL) on a wide variety of projects in waters adjacent to Dauphin Island, a gulf barrier island in the northern Gulf of Mexico fringing the Mobile Bay estuary. Internships are available for two 6 month periods: for recent graduates April \u2013 Oct, 2015 and for spring graduates June-December 2015.<\/p>\n<p>Internships in the Fisheries Ecology Lab under Dr. Sean Powers\u00a0involve hands-on participation in ongoing research. Qualified applicants will have the opportunity to assist with groundbreaking studies in Fisheries Ecology in the northern Gulf of Mexico that involve a variety of fish (bony fishes, sharks and rays) and shellfish from both offshore and inshore locales. In this process interns will gain experience with various sampling techniques used in fisheries research, as well as the associated analyses of data.<\/p>\n<p>Potential candidates will work closely with a variety of lab personnel, including principal investigators, current graduate students and lab technicians. In addition DISL hosts visiting scientists through weekly seminars which interns will have the opportunity to participate in during their stay. Much of the research conducted at the lab is by boat, thus experience with marine vessels is helpful though not a requirement. In addition, there will be laboratory processing of samples during poor weather conditions as well as after some field collections.
