\nlike a small child who seeks to understand
\nby stuffing pennies and marbles into mouth.<\/p>\n
It reverberates across the continent,
\nfallout from an old, old story.
\nHow when they found you,
\nat first they thought you were a scarecrow
\ncrucified on a Wyoming fence.<\/p>\n
In Seattle, 1000 lit candles.
\n(I wanted the city to burn.)<\/p>\n
In San Francisco, a rainbow flag hung half-mast.
\n(I wanted earth to split open.)<\/p>\n
In DC, the president finally spoke.
\n(I wanted screams to shatter glass.)<\/p>\n
In Laramie, they wore armbands.
\n(I wanted a revolution.)<\/p>\n
Thousands upon thousands say NeverAgain, NeverAgain.
\n(I don\u2019t want to remember you as symbol.)<\/p>\n
We have no more time for symbols.
\nWe have no more time for vigils.
\nWe have no more time<\/p>\n
because when I started writing
\nthis poem for you, Matthew,<\/p>\n
you were still alive.<\/p>\n
