For students who get involved with Dickinson\u2019s&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dickinson.edu\/info\/20058\/college_farm\">College Farm<\/a>, it\u2019s all part of a quintessential college experience. Just ask Iris Ballard \u201926 (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dickinson.edu\/homepage\/97\/environmental_science_environmental_studies\">environmental science<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dickinson.edu\/homepage\/55\/biology\">biology<\/a>) and Alex Davies, who show us how it\u2019s done.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBasically, this machine is pumping out water, and as it&#8217;s pumping out water, it&#8217;s poking holes, watering those holes,\u201d says&nbsp;Davies, an apprentice at the farm. \u201cIt makes the job a lot easier than hand-planting everything.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re kind of just working as fast as we can to get the plants that are in front of us into the ground,\u201d Ballard, a student farm&nbsp;worker, explains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Why the hurry? Well, things can get busy during the growing season, as the farm staff plant, cultivate, harvest and prepare organic produce and other delectable goods for Dickinson\u2019s dining hall and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dickinson.edu\/farmworks\">Farm Works store<\/a>&nbsp;and<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dickinson.edu\/info\/20058\/college_farm\/2016\/who_we_feed\">&nbsp;for the local area<\/a>. Farm staff also compost food waste from the campus and local communities. The compost is used to nourish the land.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a nice cycle, and it\u2019s also something interesting for students to do and learn from,&#8221; says Ballard, who enjoys knowing where her food comes from and giving back to the community in this way.&nbsp;\u201cIt\u2019s an important part of my college experience.&#8221;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Classes, close friends, clubs, res halls and \u2026 seedlings?
