Given her position, <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW167666427 BCX4\">she plays a vital role in shaping the city\u2019s approach to food systems and agro-ecology through public policy. <\/span><\/span><span class=\"EOP SCXW167666427 BCX4\" data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559731&quot;:720}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"TextRun SCXW265139852 BCX4\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW265139852 BCX4\">\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0Terrasson explained to us that Montpellier&#8217;s agricultural landscape is under extreme pressure to expanding urbanization, <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW265139852 BCX4\">coupled with the prediction <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW265139852 BCX4\">that 40% of farmers will retire within the next 3 years. To <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW265139852 BCX4\">lessen the pressure, the city has implemented strategies <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW265139852 BCX4\">to preserve farmlands and natural landscapes, support ecological transitions, <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW265139852 BCX4\">and support food democracy. Examples of<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/journals.openedition.org\/geocarrefour\/docannexe\/image\/8001\/img-3.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-889 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/foodstudies\/files\/2025\/03\/IMG_0506-300x124.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"124\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/foodstudies\/files\/2025\/03\/IMG_0506-300x124.png 300w, https:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/foodstudies\/files\/2025\/03\/IMG_0506.png 580w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"TextRun SCXW265139852 BCX4\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW265139852 BCX4\">initiatives include mobile slaughterhouses, developing local food systems, <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW265139852 BCX4\">public contracts for supplying school canteens, and creating <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW265139852 BCX4\">agro<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW265139852 BCX4\">-ecological reference systems for farmers to <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW265139852 BCX4\">test innovations. <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW265139852 BCX4\">Terrasson<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW265139852 BCX4\"> went into <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW265139852 BCX4\">great detail<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW265139852 BCX4\"> describing the city\u2019s wholesale food hub (MIN), which <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW265139852 BCX4\">ensures that locally produced products reach markets <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW265139852 BCX4\">efficiently. I also found the <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW265139852 BCX4\">public <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW265139852 BCX4\">contracts to be interesting; they prioritize providing high-quality and nutritious foods to school canteens, <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW265139852 BCX4\">which reinforces the city\u2019s commitment to food democracy. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"TextRun SCXW130861858 BCX4\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW130861858 BCX4\">\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0Terrasson highlighted <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW130861858 BCX4\">food insecurity to be a pressing issue within Montpellier, where 26% of the population lives in. <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW130861858 BCX4\">Food aid programs provide the equivalent of 1.1 million meals per year to <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW130861858 BCX4\">residents but<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW130861858 BCX4\"> c<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW130861858 BCX4\">oncerns of self-dignity and access to high-quality foods surround their distribution. <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW130861858 BCX4\">The city\u2019s strategy against food insecurity is to improve knowledge on healthy habits, expand current networks <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW130861858 BCX4\">sustainable shopping<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW130861858 BCX4\"> and <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW130861858 BCX4\">increase access to <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW130861858 BCX4\">local produce. <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW130861858 BCX4\">Terrasson<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW130861858 BCX4\"> emphasized that the city is not dealing with \u201cfood deserts<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW130861858 BCX4\">\u201d but<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW130861858 BCX4\"> rather faces food \u201cmirages\u201d and \u201cswamps<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW130861858 BCX4\">\u201d,<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW130861858 BCX4\"> where <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW130861858 BCX4\">food is available but not nutritious.<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW130861858 BCX4\"> What<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW130861858 BCX4\"> I took away <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW130861858 BCX4\">from this experience is <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW130861858 BCX4\">that addressing the <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW130861858 BCX4\">agro<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW130861858 BCX4\">-ecological challenges within <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW130861858 BCX4\">Montpellier<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW130861858 BCX4\"> requires coordination be<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW130861858 BCX4\">tween local governments and <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW130861858 BCX4\">residents at large. <\/span><\/span><span class=\"EOP SCXW130861858 BCX4\" data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559731&quot;:720}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"TextRun SCXW209355513 BCX4\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW209355513 BCX4\">-ecological transition, as exemplified by <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW209355513 BCX4\">Ecolotheque<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW209355513 BCX4\">. <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW209355513 BCX4\">This is a recreation center which introduces children to biodiversity, sustainable<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<div responsibility; no other place like this exists in all of France.<\/span> <span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW209355513 BCX4\">It\u2019s<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW209355513 BCX4\"> not a fully working farm, but rather an interactive space which aims to engage children aged 4-12 in<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"TextRun SCXW209355513 BCX4\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW209355513 BCX4\">hands on experiences<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW209355513 BCX4\"> (bread-making, composting, animal <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW209355513 BCX4\">care, art).<\/span> <span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW209355513 BCX4\">There\u2019s<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW209355513 BCX4\"> an insistence upon using low-impact and organic cultivation methods, a<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW209355513 BCX4\">nd I was impressed by the wide array of crops being grown.
