\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 Montpellier has positioned itself as a leader of the ecological and agricultural transition within France. Isabelle <\/span>Terras<\/span>son<\/span>, Head of Agroecology and Food for the city of metropole, sat down in a meeting with us to discuss how <\/span>Montpellier plans to balance urban expansion with agricultural preservation and food accessibility. Given her position, <\/span>she plays a vital role in shaping the city\u2019s approach to food systems and agro-ecology through public policy. <\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0Terrasson explained to us that Montpellier’s agricultural landscape is under extreme pressure to expanding urbanization, <\/span>coupled with the prediction <\/span>that 40% of farmers will retire within the next 3 years. To <\/span>lessen the pressure, the city has implemented strategies <\/span>to preserve farmlands and natural landscapes, support ecological transitions, <\/span>and support food democracy. Examples of<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

initiatives include mobile slaughterhouses, developing local food systems, <\/span>public contracts for supplying school canteens, and creating <\/span>agro<\/span>-ecological reference systems for farmers to <\/span>test innovations. <\/span>Terrasson<\/span> went into <\/span>great detail<\/span> describing the city\u2019s wholesale food hub (MIN), which <\/span>ensures that locally produced products reach markets <\/span>efficiently. I also found the <\/span>public <\/span>contracts to be interesting; they prioritize providing high-quality and nutritious foods to school canteens, <\/span>which reinforces the city\u2019s commitment to food democracy. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0Terrasson highlighted <\/span>food insecurity to be a pressing issue within Montpellier, where 26% of the population lives in. <\/span>Food aid programs provide the equivalent of 1.1 million meals per year to <\/span>residents but<\/span> c<\/span>oncerns of self-dignity and access to high-quality foods surround their distribution. <\/span>The city\u2019s strategy against food insecurity is to improve knowledge on healthy habits, expand current networks <\/span>sustainable shopping<\/span> and <\/span>increase access to <\/span>local produce. <\/span>Terrasson<\/span> emphasized that the city is not dealing with \u201cfood deserts<\/span>\u201d but<\/span> rather faces food \u201cmirages\u201d and \u201cswamps<\/span>\u201d,<\/span> where <\/span>food is available but not nutritious.<\/span> What<\/span> I took away <\/span>from this experience is <\/span>that addressing the <\/span>agro<\/span>-ecological challenges within <\/span>Montpellier<\/span> requires coordination be<\/span>tween local governments and <\/span>residents at large. <\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 Education is also a major part of Montpellier’s <\/span>agro<\/span>-ecological transition, as exemplified by <\/span>Ecolotheque<\/span>. <\/span>This is a recreation center which introduces children to biodiversity, sustainable<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

agriculture<\/span> and ecological responsibility; no other place like this exists in all of France.<\/span> It\u2019s<\/span> not a fully working farm, but rather an interactive space which aims to engage children aged 4-12 in<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

hands on experiences<\/span> (bread-making, composting, animal <\/span>care, art).<\/span> There\u2019s<\/span> an insistence upon using low-impact and organic cultivation methods, a<\/span>nd I was impressed by the wide array of crops being grown. There were also various bird species<\/span> (<\/span>some being endangered<\/span>), we had <\/span>a very interesting<\/span> run-in with a turkey! <\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
