Smith wrote her free verse &#8220;erasure&#8221; poem in 2017 (when it appeared in the New Yorker) before it was reformatted (with italics) and published in a book in 2018.\u00a0 Smith&#8217;s use of erasure meant the she selected and rearranged words and phrases from the Declaration of Independence<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>CONTEXT:\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.americanyawp.com\/text\/05-the-american-revolution\/#IV_Independence\">American Revolution<\/a><\/h3>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;The majority of the [Declaration] outlined a list of specific grievances that the colonists had with British attempts to reform imperial administration during the 1760s and 1770s. An early draft blamed the British for the transatlantic slave trade and even for discouraging attempts by the colonists to promote abolition. Delegates from South Carolina and Georgia as well as those from northern states who profited from the trade all opposed this language, and it was removed.&#8221; &#8212;<em>American Yawp<\/em>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.americanyawp.com\/text\/05-the-american-revolution\/#IV_Independence\">Chap. 5: IV<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.battlefields.org\/learn\/primary-sources\/jefferson-condemns-slave-trade-declaration-independence\">Jefferson\u2019s draft clause on African slave trade (Battlefield Trust)<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Jefferson&#8217;s preamble provoked little debate, though Benjamin Franklin convinced him to make an important editorial change &#8211;revising the original phrase, &#8220;sacred and undeniable rights&#8221; to &#8220;self-evident rights.&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>\n<figure id=\"attachment_762\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-762\" style=\"width: 204px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/fys-pinsker\/files\/2025\/09\/Draft-Declaration.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-762\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/fys-pinsker\/files\/2025\/09\/Draft-Declaration-204x300.jpg\" alt=\"Draft Declaration\" width=\"204\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/fys-pinsker\/files\/2025\/09\/Draft-Declaration-204x300.jpg 204w, https:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/fys-pinsker\/files\/2025\/09\/Draft-Declaration-695x1024.jpg 695w, https:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/fys-pinsker\/files\/2025\/09\/Draft-Declaration-768x1131.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/fys-pinsker\/files\/2025\/09\/Draft-Declaration-1043x1536.jpg 1043w, https:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/fys-pinsker\/files\/2025\/09\/Draft-Declaration-1390x2048.jpg 1390w, https:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/fys-pinsker\/files\/2025\/09\/Draft-Declaration.jpg 1738w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 204px) 100vw, 204px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-762\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Jefferson&#8217;s original draft (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.loc.gov\/item\/mtjbib000156\/\">Library of Congress<\/a>)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Jefferson&#8217;s revised preamble was truly an <strong>Enlightenment era<\/strong> statement that celebrated <strong>natural rights<\/strong> (<a href=\"https:\/\/housedivided.dickinson.edu\/sites\/teagle\/enlightenment\/\">Lockean liberalism<\/a>), but modern students need to remember that Enlightenment era thinkers often separated natural rights from civil and political rights in ways that no longer seem fair or just.<\/li>\n<li>The second section of the Declaration, its &#8220;train of abuses,&#8221; invoked a different Enlightenment era philosophy:\u00a0 <strong>republicanism<\/strong> or the ideology of representative government.<\/li>\n<li>In 1848, Elizabeth Cady Stanton famously rewrote Jefferson&#8217;s document as a <a href=\"https:\/\/housedivided.dickinson.edu\/sites\/teagle\/texts\/declaration-of-sentiments-1848\/\">Declaration of Sentiments<\/a>, adopted by a women and men at a convention for women&#8217;s rights at Seneca Falls, New York.<\/li>\n<li>And here&#8217;s what Abraham Lincoln said in 1857 about the Founders and their original intentions with the Declaration:<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;They meant to set up a standard maxim for free society, which should be familiar to all, and revered by all; constantly looked to, constantly labored for, and even though never perfectly attained, constantly approximated\u2026&#8221; (<a href=\"https:\/\/housedivided.dickinson.edu\/sites\/teagle\/lincoln-on-declaration\/\">June 26, 1857<\/a>)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h3>SUBTEXT:\u00a0 Promises or Hypocrisy<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>When the preamble asserted that \u201call men are created equal,\u201d why didn\u2019t the delegates recognize how hypocritical these natural rights claims sounded in an era of chattel slavery, Indian removal, and coverture?<\/li>\n<li>Most people today focus\u00a0 on the preamble to this Declaration, but the delegates to the Second Continental Congress devoted nearly all of their time toward revising the list of grievances against the King (known as \u201cthe train of abuses\u201d).\u00a0 What can we learn about their values and priorities from a close reading of these complaints?<\/li>\n<li>Has Tracy K.
