{"id":8,"date":"2013-08-18T17:30:14","date_gmt":"2013-08-18T21:30:14","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/fysdetective\/?page_id=8"},"modified":"2024-08-20T10:14:56","modified_gmt":"2024-08-20T14:14:56","slug":"course-information","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/fysdetective\/","title":{"rendered":"Course Information"},"content":{"rendered":"<blockquote><p>\u201c&#8230;when\u00a0you have eliminated\u00a0all which is\u00a0impossible, then whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth.\u201d ~Sherlock Holmes<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>~~ Fall 2024 Syllabus: Coming Soon!\u00a0~~~<\/p>\n<p>The First-Year Seminar (FYS) introduces students\u00a0to Dickinson College as a \u201ccommunity of inquiry\u201d by developing habits of mind essential to liberal learning.\u00a0 Through the study of detective fiction and film, students will:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>critically analyze information and ideas in the texts we discuss;<\/li>\n<li>examine issues from multiple perspectives;<\/li>\n<li>discuss, debate and defend ideas, including one\u2019s own views, with clarity and reason;<\/li>\n<li>learn to find, evaluate, and correctly incorporate outside sources so as to avoid plagiarism;<\/li>\n<li>create clear academic writing.<\/li>\n<li>utilize the small group seminar format to interact and engage in discussion with your peers as well as with me, your professor<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>For our particular FYS, we will examine the appeal of the mystery and suspense genre. \u00a0We\u2019ll work to develop an understanding of the literary devices used to foster audiences\u2019 experience of mystery and suspense, including point of view, characterization, plot, and setting.\u00a0 In mysteries, characters and plots are driven by issues of power, crime, and law, but also gender, desire, politics, class, race, individuality, and society\u2014just to name a few! \u00a0This is a genre driven by questions: questions of identity (Who is it? Whodunnit?), questions of epistemology (How do we know? What do we know?), and questions of hermeneutics (How should we interpret and understand?). Over the course of the semester we will examine 19th- and 20th-century short stories, novels, and films as well as a range of secondary readings that will provide theoretical frameworks through which\u00a0<em>you<\/em>\u00a0will become the investigators of literary and cultural contexts.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Contact<\/strong>: \u00a0Professor\u00a0Sarah E.
