Each year the German Club organizes a formal dinner for German faculty, students, and special guests to enjoy a traditional German meal, and hear from a guest speaker. This year Professor Mark Harman of Elizabethtown College was invited to speak, and gave a talk entitled “Kafka Imagining America.” Harman, who is a professor of German, English, and International Studies, is a prize-winning translator of Kafka. In his talk, Harman spoke about the sources and inspirations that Franz Kafka sights when writing his representation of the US in his novel, Amerika: The Missing Person. To conclude, Harman debuted a recent translation of a short story by Kafka.
The evening was one to remember for all the attendees. Dickinson students, international German students, and even two student visitors from Elizabethtown’s German Club gathered around tables with several faculty members, and even outside supporters of the German department. With plates full of Beef Rouladen, Käsespätzle, German Potato Salad, and so much more, this annual tradition was not just fun, but tasty as well!
A special “danke” to the German Glub officers Peter Hechler, Michael Burgunder, Justin Brown, Madison Alley, and Geo Nikolov, as well as club advisor Professor Janine Judwig.
