The United States Army faced malaria, both at home and abroad. German troops contracted it in Greece, in the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pinsk_Marshes\">Pinsk marshes<\/a>, and in North Africa.<a href=\"#_ftn2\" name=\"_ftnref2\"><sup>[2]<\/sup><\/a> Throughout WWII, an average of 100 German soldiers died per hour.<a href=\"#_ftn3\" name=\"_ftnref3\"><sup>[3]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Malaria was not to incapacitate millions more.<a href=\"#_ftn4\" name=\"_ftnref4\"><sup>[4]<\/sup><\/a> In 1934, when <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hans_Andersag\">Hans Andersag<\/a> worked for Bayer IG Farbenindustrie in Elberfeld, Germany, he discovered chloroquine (aka <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/19593586\/\">Resochin<\/a>).<a href=\"#_ftn5\" name=\"_ftnref5\"><sup>[5]<\/sup><\/a> It was deemed too toxic for human use.<a href=\"#_ftn6\" name=\"_ftnref6\"><sup>[6]<\/sup><\/a> Two years later, Andersag developed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3393441\/\">Sontochin<\/a>, a somewhat safer derivative.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">On January 27, 1942, Reichsf\u00fchrer SS Heinrich Himmler spent five hours with his visitors, retired Professor <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Claus_Schilling\">Claus Schilling<\/a> and Reichs\u00e4rztef\u00fchrer <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Leonardo_Conti\">Leonardo Conti<\/a>.<a href=\"#_ftn7\" name=\"_ftnref7\"><sup>[7]<\/sup><\/a> Afterwards, he provided Schilling with an experimental malaria research station at the Dachau concentration camp. Of an estimated 1,200 intentionally infected inmates, many were then injected with synthetic malaria drugs, \u201cwith high and sometimes lethal doses.\u201d<a href=\"#_ftn8\" name=\"_ftnref8\"><sup>[8]<\/sup><\/a> At least 120 of these victims were priests.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">When Himmler proposed adding an <em>SS-<\/em>institute exploring insects, the \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ahnenerbe\">Ahnenerbe<\/a>\u201c organization established one directly east of the prisoners\u2019 compound. New research suggests that dropping <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/world-europe-26193808\">malaria-infected mosquitoes<\/a> over enemy territory as biological weapons might have been the goal.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In 1946, during the first Nuremberg trial, Schilling admitted to have \u201cinoculated between 900 and 1,000 prisoners.\u201d They \u201cwere not volunteers.\u201d<a href=\"#_ftn9\" name=\"_ftnref9\"><sup>[9]<\/sup><\/a> Hundreds of them died as a result of the experiment, and the military tribunal sentenced Schilling to death by hanging.<a href=\"#_ftn10\" name=\"_ftnref10\"><sup>[10]<\/sup><\/a> Buchenwald survivor <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Eugen_Kogon\">Eugen Kogon<\/a> mentioned the experiments in a 1946 book, and decades later, historian <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ernst_Klee\">Ernst Klee<\/a> quipped that a professor emeritus got an entire concentration camp as an experimental laboratory.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">After Allied forces captured Tunis in May 1943, Jean Schneider, who carried out <em>Sontochin<\/em> trials for a Bayer partner in North Africa, offered his data and remaining drugs to U.S. troops.<a href=\"#_ftn11\" name=\"_ftnref11\"><sup>[11]<\/sup><\/a> Desperate to cure half a million of its own men incapacitated by malaria, the U.S. Government not only re-created Himmler\u2019s research model, but increased it tenfold. A dozen strains of malaria were injected into mental health patients and convicted criminals.<a href=\"#_ftn12\" name=\"_ftnref12\"><sup>[12]<\/sup><\/a> Many more deaths later, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Chloroquine\">chloroquine<\/a> emerged as the best and least expensive antimalarial ever developed. Evidence dating back to World War II, suggesting that in some people chloroquine even causes psychosis, was basically ignored.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">For decades, U.S. soldiers received the drug<em>,<\/em> either before they were stationed in tropical territories or after they returned with malaria. And before long, waves of tourists began to use Resochin. Many people suffered <a href=\"https:\/\/www.drugs.com\/sfx\/chloroquine-side-effects.html\">side effects<\/a> such as shortness of breath, muscle weaknesses, hearing and mental problems. Others refused to take the medicine. In addition, malaria parasites became immune against the drug, and cheaper generics flooded the markets. In the end, only Pakistan produced chloroquine any more. In July 2019, the Bayer AG stopped merchandizing <em>Resochin<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In September 2019, the Trump administration ended an early warning program that used to train scientists in sixty foreign laboratories (including one that shortly thereafter discovered the virus causing <a href=\"https:\/\/coronavirus.jhu.edu\/map.html\">COVID-19<\/a><em>)<\/em> to respond to viruses with the potential to cause a pandemic.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Then, in early January 2020, National Security Council officials received warnings about the potential dangers from a new virus in Wuhan, China. The State Department\u2019s epidemiologist warned that this virus could develop into a pandemic, and the National Center for Medical Intelligence agreed.<a href=\"#_ftn13\" name=\"_ftnref13\"><sup>[13]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">On January 20, the World Health Organization (WHO) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/docs\/default-source\/coronaviruse\/situation-reports\/20200121-sitrep-1-2019-ncov.pdf?sfvrsn=20a99c10_4\">reported cases<\/a> in China, Thailand, Japan, and South Korea. One day later, Vietnam, Singapore and Washington state announced their first case of <em>COVID-19<\/em><em>.<\/em> On January 22<sup>nd<\/sup>, when asked whether he <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2020\/01\/22\/cnbc-transcript-president-donald-trump-sits-down-with-cnbcs-joe-kernen-at-the-world-economic-forum-in-davos-switzerland.html\">worries about a pandemic<\/a>, Trump replied, \u201cNo. Not at all. And we have it totally under control.\u201d<a href=\"#_ftn14\" name=\"_ftnref14\"><sup>[14]<\/sup><\/a> On February 27<sup>th<\/sup>, Trump added, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2020\/02\/28\/politics\/donald-trump-coronavirus-miracle-stock-markets\/index.html\">It\u2019s going to disappear. One day it\u2019s like a miracle\u2014it will disappear.<\/a><a href=\"#_ftn15\" name=\"_ftnref15\"><sup>[15]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Whereas the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) officials repeatedly stated, it would take 12\u201318 months to develop a vaccine, on March 2<sup>nd<\/sup>, Trump claimed that a vaccine would be available \u201crelatively soon.\u201d<a href=\"#_ftn16\" name=\"_ftnref16\"><sup>[16]<\/sup><\/a> On March 17<sup>th<\/sup>, he added, \u201cI\u2019ve always known this is a real\u2014this is a pandemic. I felt it was a pandemic long before it was called a pandemic\u2026\u201d<a href=\"#_ftn17\" name=\"_ftnref17\"><sup>[17]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Trump has German roots<a href=\"#_ftn18\" name=\"_ftnref18\"><sup>[18]<\/sup><\/a> as does chloroquine. Trump became a tough salesman for chloroquine makers, promoting the antimalarial drug as a treatment for <em>COVID-19<\/em>. On March 19<sup>th<\/sup>, Bayer announced a donation of 3 million tablets of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.businesswire.com\/news\/home\/20200319005585\/en\/Bayer-Partners-U.S.-Government-Major-Product-Donation\">Resochin <\/a>(chloroquine phosphate), until then not approved for use in the United States. On that day, Trump uttered, \u201cBut the nice part is, it\u2019s been around for a long time, so we know that if it\u2014if things don\u2019t go as planned, it\u2019s not going to kill anybody.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Within days, of course, the old dangers resurfaced. On March 23<sup>rd<\/sup>, Nigeria reported its first cases of chloroquine poisoning.<a href=\"#_ftn19\" name=\"_ftnref19\"><sup>[19]<\/sup><\/a> In Arizona, a man fearing infection, died after swallowing \u201ca form of chloroquine used to treat aquariums.\u201d<a href=\"#_ftn20\" name=\"_ftnref20\"><sup>[20]<\/sup><\/a> His wife, who also took the drug, was in critical condition.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">At that time, a Brasil hospital had started a clinical study. It was supposed to treat 440 <em>COVID-19<\/em> patients. One group was to receive a high dosage of 600\u00a0mg chloroquine twice a day for ten days, the other, 450\u00a0mg once a day for five days, with a double dose on the first day. After three days, however, with merely the first 81 patients enrolled, the high dosage trial was stopped because several had either damaged their heart muscles or died of arrhythmia.<a href=\"#_ftn21\" name=\"_ftnref21\"><sup>[21]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">On March 27<sup>th<\/sup>, a pensive President marveled, that this pandemic \u201cwas something nobody thought could happen\u2026 Nobody would have ever thought a thing like this could have happened.\u201d<a href=\"#_ftn22\" name=\"_ftnref22\"><sup>[22]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">One day later, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) gave in to pressure, \u201cauthorizing the emergency use of chloroquine phosphate and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hydroxychloroquine\">hydroxychloroquine<\/a> sulfate, \u2026 when clinical trials are not available, or participation is not feasible\u2026\u201d<a href=\"#_ftn23\" name=\"_ftnref23\"><sup>[23]<\/sup><\/a> That triggered panic-buying in Africa and South Asia,<a href=\"#_ftn24\" name=\"_ftnref24\"><sup>[24]<\/sup><\/a> and all too many Americans became eager guinea pigs. Florida alone obtained nearly one million doses for its hospitals, although most of them did not want that drug.<a href=\"#_ftn25\" name=\"_ftnref25\"><sup>[25]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Where used, it quickly became evident that this drug poses a particular danger for people with heart, eye, liver and kidney problems, which are common among the elderly. In other words, those whom <em>COVID-19<\/em> makes the sickest to begin with, are then also the most vulnerable by the side effects of chloroquine. Studying <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medrxiv.org\/content\/10.1101\/2020.04.16.20065920v1.full.pdf\">hospitalized veterans<\/a>, for example, showed that the death rate actually increased among those treated with hydroxychloroquine.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">On March 30<sup>th<\/sup>, the President told Fox News, \u201cWe inherited a broken test.\u201d Of course, there could be no test before the new virus emerged. China first confirmed its existence on Dec. 31, 2019.<a href=\"#_ftn26\" name=\"_ftnref26\"><sup>[26]<\/sup><\/a> By early April, when the pandemic worsened, Trump blamed the media, Democratic state governors, the previous administration, China, and the World Health Organization<em>.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>On April 23<sup>rd<\/sup>, Karen M. Masterson, a professor of science journalism and author of <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/2WFBn0D\">\u00a0\u201c<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/2WFBn0D\">The <\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/2WFBn0D\">Malaria Project<\/a>,\u201d warned, \u201cTrump\u2019s salesmanship of chloroquine has dragged regular people into the medical sciences with too little experience to understand the consequences.\u201d For details, she referred to \u201cmore than 500 boxes of archived materials I used\u2026 Chloroquine, especially, showed unpredictable side effects. Itchy hives. Vomiting. Severe diarrhea. Headaches. Bleached hair. Depression. Blurred vision. Suicidal thoughts. Nightmares. Trouble sleeping. By July 1<sup>st<\/sup>, it released \u201creports of serious heart rhythm problems\u2026, blood and lymph system disorders, kidney injuries, and liver problems\u2026\u201d<a href=\"#_ftn28\" name=\"_ftnref28\"><sup>[28]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Despite record fatalities since then, during a 4<sup>th <\/sup>of July celebration, \u201cwith jets flying overhead and soldiers parachuting through the air,\u201d Trump claimed that 99% of <em>COVID-19<\/em> cases are \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.statesman.com\/news\/20200707\/fact-check-are-99-of-coronavirus-cases-lsquototally-harmlessrsquo-as-trump-said\">totally harmless<\/a>\u201d. When <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Stella_Immanuel\">Stella Gwandiku-Ambe Immanuel<\/a> claimed that hydroxychloroquine can cure <em>COVID-19<\/em>, and that <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Face_masks_during_the_COVID-19_pandemic\">face masks<\/a> are as unnecessary as is social distancing, she quickly impressed him.<a href=\"#_ftn29\" name=\"_ftnref29\"><sup>[29]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The US has less than 5% of the world\u2019s population, and approximately 25% of global deaths from <em>COVID<\/em><em>-19<\/em>. That currently amounts to almost one thousand more Americans dying per day. During an interview with Axios on HBO, Trump conceded: \u201cIt is what it is.\u201d<a href=\"#_ftn30\" name=\"_ftnref30\"><sup>[30]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><a href=\"#_ftnref1\" name=\"_ftn1\"><sup>[1]<\/sup><\/a> Russell, Paul F.: \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/history.amedd.army.mil\/booksdocs\/wwii\/Malaria\/chapterI.htm\">Communicable diseases Malaria<\/a>.\u201d Medical Department of the United States Army in World War II.
